:( 220 less Bungie employees
thefirstknife answered:
Not much else to say honestly, this is absolutely devastating and, unfortunately, nothing new this year in the industry. It also puts an end to the whole spiel people had last year about layoffs and how they were because “game bad.” Now it isn’t, this is the best expansion ever and layoffs still happened. It’s because nothing about the game impacts this; layoffs happen because of capitalist greed. So many studios suffered the same this year. We need to kill and eat every single CEO.
This will once again be really tough for everyone laid off as well as for the remaining employees. As always, I’d advise against preemptive doomposting about the fate (heh) of the game, mostly because of those who remained and are going to be burdened with working twice as hard. We should also expect things to be a little slower and probably also a lot glitchier for a while so please try and be understanding to everyone who still has a job, if you’re continuing to play.
But yeah. Unionise.
Yeah this is super important. Like obviously we’re all angry and disappointed and worried, but I already saw people lamenting how everything will be bad now. And it’s not something that those laid off want to hear and it’s not something that those still employed want to hear.
A healthy dose of caution is good, as well as a healthy dose of tempering expectations going forward, regardless of the promise that their schedule isn’t changing. Maybe it’s not! And a lot of the future content has already been made. Revenant for sure, some portions of Heresy probably as well.
But no matter what happens, there’s no need to go online, where the devs can see, and only talk about how our video game will be bad now. Not only is that completely missing the point of WHY this event is bad (we should be outraged for people losing their livelihoods in an increasingly horrifying environment, not about whether our game will now not be as good), it’s also just making thing way harder for the remaining employees to get through. They don’t need to be hit with the implications that their work and expertise means nothing and that they’ve contributed nothing.
your-local-fool asked:
I’ve been gone for a minute. Why do the vex have sick jackets now
thefirstknife answered:
They’re gaining individuality! It’s been going on for a while now, since the Conductor gained the Echo of Command back in episode Echoes and has been messing with the Vex. It resulted in them slowly becoming more individual. Really neat lore tab from back in Echoes that lists some of the stuff random Guardians noted about the Vex acting differently, with the fan favourite being:
Right as I was about to draw, the Hobgoblin waved its hand at me. I figured it was signaling an ambush and I looked around, but it didn’t have any backup. It waved again, and I gave it a little wave back—I didn’t see the harm. Well, it got real excited at that and waved with both arms.
This allowed them to be sometimes more efficient in combat because they have a better way of navigating fighting the Guardians (aka paracausality) if they are free to think individually. They began using actual combat tactics rather than just running at us, as well as making them better at simply processing stuff. Some voice lines from Ikora from Echoes about this and about the difference between the Vex she yoked and the Vex that essentially joined her on their own. Specifically with the Precursors, they aren’t yoked and manipulated through the Echo; rather they’re made more individual and then directed, like an army capable of following specific inputs, rather than mindless pawns.
It also leads to funny things like the Vex having direct beef with Guardians and swearing at us.
This isn’t always beneficial for the Conductor as a section of them have begun rejecting her and her commands, and moving on their own. The problem with individuality is that the Vex are beginning to make their own choices and some of them do not align with what the Conductor wants. An interesting one is from the raid lore book where a Hobgoblin decides to be an artist and the Conductor… Doesn’t like it one bit:
A Hobgoblin holds up useless, shining pieces of scrap to weld to its body. Its hand is very steady as it applies the solder.
TELL ME WHY.
Its hand jerks back. It lifts its face as a sunflower to that which gives it life.
V^ directive(original/HOBGOBLIN)==observe==judge==enact || IF(independent)=true THEN directive(modified/HOBGOBLIN(independent))==observe==create==build (self, other, beauty) ^V
An aspiring artist? Useless. A waste of mind.
The Conductor drains it of radiolaria and destroys it. This is not the only time this happened, so for individualistic minds that the Vex are becoming, this might’ve contributed to them breaking away from her command. If she wants them to be individuals, she should treat them as such, right?
The lore book we get for collecting datapads also adds to this, letting us know that the Vanguard and Guardians are well aware of the Vex slowly breaking away from the Conductor; at least some of them:
Dedicated observation of the Nessian Schism leads me to believe that Maya’s control over the Echo of Command has begun to dwindle. I witnessed several groups of Vex roaming in loose bands, seemingly without patrol routes. I saw one Goblin sit on the ground and watch an insect with childlike interest for some time.
I discovered a group of Choral Vex frames, devoid of life, warped and twisted, driven into the ground like corpse daffodils in early spring. They were drained of radiolaria, perhaps in a punitive measure. If the Conductor is forced to mete out such draconian punishment, then her hold over the Collective must truly be imperiled.
Probably the most damning is this lore tab where the Vex actively and directly tell the Conductor that she’s not welcome anymore:
-The Collective has processed your threats-
-You flee to Vex networks and attempt to claim sovereignty over our Minds-
-The Collective is uninterested in your ambitions-
-You will tap the fourth dimension and exhaust your usefulness-
-The Collective executes a response-
-Return and be Expunged-
So, now that some of the Vex are individual and can think for themselves and have interests and personalities for themselves, they rejected the Conductor and some of them have decided it’s time to wear clothes and form a criminal syndicate on Mars. Honestly, one of the most realistic scenarios for them. What to do with their free time? Crime of course.
One of the most exciting developments in the recent stuff for me. Everything with the Vex and their changes has been a delight, I can’t wait to see where else it leads.
In the middle of my 18 lore tabs opened and DLV still not having uploaded the Edge of Fate sidequests, I forgot… Sharp Cheddar. I had to go find the quest somewhere in the folder with my 4000 screenshots.
We found a Vex friend on Kepler! It calls itself Sharp Cheddar. I would kill and die for Sharp Cheddar. It specifically came to us to ask for help. It wanted us to help fake its death so that it could escape the Conductor and be its own person.
We left it with the Aionians to look after it.

What a bad bad no good day. Heart goes out to all the talented Bungie folk who lost their jobs. I knew that Sony deal was going to go rotten. I've already seen the chuds celebrating saying this is what Bungie deserves for "pushing social issues". If I could reach through my screen and strangle them I would.
I'll keep my ear to the ground for any more info on it but from what I can tell it's not even over yet. Christ, capitalism sucks.
I’ll add the link to the article as well if you don’t mind. Massive lay offs happened, as well as The Final Shape being delayed to June next year.
Absolutely awful all around for everyone involved. From what we know now, this is Sony’s doing. The article reports as well that they’ve been doing lay offs across the board all year. This is also a wider gaming industry problem.
Also yeah, the commentary on this from the gamers is as “incredible” as always. What a shitty situation for everyone (except for some capitalist pigs execs I guess).
I’d also advise people to prepare for some content being cut or further delayed or not turning out as initially envisioned. Basically, lower your expectations. This is first and foremost about the employees who, despite getting some extra time to work on the expansion, will still probably have to compensate for laid off workers. So things will probably have to be cut. Or they’ll be forced into crunch and I sincerely hope they won’t.
Having a big frustration with the game director doin his response-to-the-reaction on a tweet because I had to dig through a bunch of sweatbaby reacts before finding the video itself on youtube. That sucks! Would have been great if like the tweet got linked on the youtube page or he posted the video on the youtube account.
For the most part, what he said was stuff I didn't need to have explained because Ive been paying attention to the high-level and drawing-back-the-curtain communications theyve done in the past. All that stuff about armor, I groked that on my own when I sat down and looked at all the armor sets in a 4 season year of destiny. The stuff about pvp modes made perfect sense to me, you got something new for skilled players and something to entice players who are scared of the crucible because of the skilled players. The stuff about how the showcase was filmed a while ago and the team is very busy working, that was some "daycare worker being patient with child because they knocked over their own juice" meme level explanation.
I am so ashamed and sad for my game's community that the literally destiny presidenty has to get on twitter to explain to grown ass men that the game is being worked on, and they aren't just sitting around waiting for us to complain about stuff and then tell us what theyre gonna do about it, like this is some fucking restaurant and joe is the maitre'd who's gonna go back in the kitchen and say 'Hey chef chris proctor stop making that delicious exotic weapon potroast and put some more maps in the goddam spaghettios I got a table full of screaming 11 6th graders out here' If he thinks this is the best way to handle the way the sweatbabys are behaving, that is the most sad and tragic commentary on this game's communuty.
I don't like that after years of consistent messaging about not overpromising on delivery, he straight up promised a map-pack that, based on what they've told us in the past, is gonna require a huge shift in resources. That's very worrying! I thought this kind of stuff was over! Great job aztecross et all! You got dad to turn the van around! Now who knows what's gonna get knocked off pipeline as a result. The later FS dungeon? A reprised destination? Maybe the next reprised raid?
If a destiny CM happens to see this, I'm sorry. I'm just sorry. You deserve better. Destiny deserves better. The Crucible deserves better. None of these pvp tryhards make Shaxx or Saint proud. They're just loud. I'm sorry y'all have to do so much to keep them from being deafening.
This is also something that has to be said. On the surface I’m really excited for what Joe talked about and for everything he promised and for more communication. But I really also feel like this was exactly like talking to a bunch of entitled kids who don’t really have a grasp on how this work is done.
I genuinely don’t think that this should be necessary. We don’t need this level of personal involvement from a developer. I’m afraid that at the first moment he says something that someone mildly dislikes, they will use him as their personal punching bag. Which they’ve already been doing since the State of the Game article.
So many people on twitter are praising this as “this is the type of communication that we need, bravo Bungie!” and dear lord there is not a single other gaming company that does this much coddling of its community. Maybe that’s why people still stick with Destiny after all these years, maybe that’s why they’re quick to forgive Bungie and still preorder the next expansion even if they hate the game, who knows.
I hope that they committed to this out of genuine desire and ability to do so, rather than feeling backed into a corner and essentially forced. I want to stay as reasonable as possible; no huge company will change its tune in a few weeks over some online backlash, but it would be insane to say that it doesn’t have an effect. I am just hoping that this will not result in overworking and underpaying developers to meet the deadlines and promises. They’ve been there and done that. Nobody wants it again. They already have a really tight timeline with seasons and expansions. I don’t want something more important to be cut so we can have more damn pvp maps.
Again, I want to stay positive because this is nice and I genuinely don’t want to think that they would make this decision lightly and at the detriment of their devs. But it’s something to keep in mind. I’m also firmly against this gamer entitlement, especially coming from a community that has repeatedly shown that they have NO clue how development works, that harass developers, continuously shit on them and call them lazy and so on. It’s absolutely unreasonable that people want to act like they’re besties with devs. You don’t know these people. This is their job, they don’t owe their time to every random person online. I hope Bungie can handle going into this without harming devs.
Also mostly hoping that this will finally satisfy the weird gremlins who do nothing except play Destiny and that Joe’s streams will be enough to answer all of their burning questions and that they won’t revert into harassment the first time Joe says something they don’t like. Please let this be enough for them so we can move on in peace and so we can stop being inundated with a billion negativity videos and posts. Also if I hear one more person say anything remotely like “Bungie never listens,” istg.
Speaking of D2 twitter, yesterday people were harassing Bungie CM's (mainly Liana, of course) because some Destiny streamer got banned mid-stream on his birthday. They swarmed all of her posts, including one asking for feedback on disability accessibility in the companion app, saying "we don't care" about disability, putting their mediocre streamer above everything else.
Bungie help finally responds, tells the guy he got banned for repeated breaches of the code of conduct, and it comes out that not only has he been griefing people, but he's the same guy who back in 2020 harassed a black D2 streamer by using an alternate twitch account to spew racial slurs in the guy's chat.
All the folks defending him (lots of white folks and anime pfp's, of course) say that "oh, he's grown since then, really regrets what he did and he's a better person now"
Idk, man, if he's griefing then at the very least the ban was still deserved. More likely, though, he's probably the same person he was 2 years ago, just better at hiding it, and gets it out by griefing randos instead of directly hurling racial slurs at folks.
I'm all for growth and becoming a better person but what I saw, he hasn't actually done either.
Oh my god, I saw that and went looking for information because I never heard of this streamer for Destiny. Found the stuff about griefing, but this is the first time I see the stuff with slurs. Yeah, I’m not buying it about him being “a better person.” Especially not with, as you said, all the griefing. The man is clearly addicted to bullying people.
They always harass Liana which is additionally shitty and also extra additionally, swarming her post of her asking for disability suggestions. Her post!
A lot of people, including content creators, were also saying that they don’t mind people being banned but that Bungie should tell us, every time, the reason for someone being banned. Which is just not how this works. A dev even had to chime in to say that they can’t issue details about bans because that will allow ban evades.
If someone is banned, especially for multiple infractions, that’s all you need to know. This wasn’t a misclick, it wasn’t an accident. Bungie checked and replied and said the user was flagged multiple times. That’s all you need to know.
We are undeterred in our commitment to stand up for reproductive choice and liberty.
Bungie is committed to ensuring that every one of our employees and their families have safe and affordable access to essential healthcare needs. As we continue to expand our digital-first workplace to more states, we will now be implementing a travel reimbursement program for any employee to use when they or a dependent cannot get access to the healthcare they need where they live.
Important bit because I’ve seen way too many people saying that Bungie is just doing the standard big company posturing, but they’re not. They’re actively working on helping those they can and protecting their employees.
A Vex Minotaur rapidly teleporting towards you, and a group of Hive Knights with one sword running towards you
Fight.
I step away and let them kiss.
It finally dawned on me where I knew the name of the new Expunge mission name and
Is Bungie going to go anywhere with all of this recent theme naming? Katabasis, Glykon, Gilgamesh, Labyrinth, and now this. Or is someone there going through their Greek mythology phase as an adult instead of a young teen?
Thinking about it just now, I guess it makes sense. Considering what is going on now and what's been hinted at. Never mind when we finally get to The Witch Queen. Feels almost avilicious though.
Finally my time has come!!
The Vex in general have always been inspired by Greek mythology and names. Minotaurs, Hydras, Harpies… The names of individual Vex as well, mostly Greek with some mix of Latin.
Beyond Light has been very Vex-focused, especially Europa as a location, and there’s plenty of names that follow the same theme, starting from locations on Europa (Asterion Abyss) and other stuff.
I won’t go into too many details, tho I might once I get a better chance, but I do want to focus on Override names of bosses.
The champion that shows up in Override? This guy?
It’s hard to see but its name is “Scytale.” A scytale was an ancient Greek method of encripting messages.
The names of Override bosses are Tacitas, Thesmotae and Portunos.
Tacitas is a feminine form of “tacitus” in Latin. It’s a plural and means something that is secretive, unmentioned, concealed.
I’m not an expert in Greek so I couldn’t find much on Thesmotae, besides the greek word “thesmotete” which means lawgiver, someone who makes legislation.
Portunos is very close to Portunus, who is a Roman god of keys, doors and gateways.
There’s a certain theme here: encription, keys, secrets and laws. It’s definitely not a coincidence but my brain is also currently not in the intergalactic ascendant state to completely understand the full scope of the meaning.
Discussion of possible spoilers and theories below the cut.
Okay so do y’all know about Stochastic Variable and its lore? No? Well. Here. Take a look at this
Okay the top line got cutoff but honestly I’ll take it if I got all the timelines in. Like, LOOK at this. Honestly this is the craziest lore so far in this season. It’s the potential timelines Lakshmi saw. Which uhhhhh yeah it seems that just like a certain Psion we met last season (Ixel, for those of you wondering), it gave her *one* scenario where she ends up top dog. And ya know, that was also the stuff that showed that Vex predictions could likely be subverted.
Also want to point out the “Asher speaks” statement. Notice how both of the timelines that ends up in, FWC gets screwed. I’m just. Is there potential for Lakshmi to screw up SO BADLY that we get some potential badmouthing from Asher???
But besides that, I would like to just show one more thing, which was the first timeline from the Far Future lore tab from last season.
hmmm
yeah i foresee this blowing up in Lakshmi’s face
Oh yeah, absolutely. Same as it did for the Psions. Psions and Lakshmi seems to be tapping into the same pool of knowledge tbh. And while some of it may end up being true, it’s more likely that they will drive themselves insane thinking about how to prevent some of it or make some of it happen.
