about

Naarm punk jazz darlings The Rookies present Play Jazz 3, the latest instalment in their celebrated album series exploring the meaning of jazz in the 21st century. With their signature alchemy melding party-facing fire and star-eyed whimsy, the Fitzroy quintet digs beneath the surface of jazz history to unearth and reimagine rare gems and deep cuts from Lonnie Liston Smith, John Coltrane, and more.

Play Jazz 3 features new versions of compositions by the often overlooked mother of bebop Mary Lou Williams; the tongue-in-cheek, New York No Wave ensemble The Lounge Lizards, led by master musician, artist (and satirist) John Lurie; and one of jazz history’s most criminally underrated spiritual conduits, The Awakening, whose classic offering on Black Jazz records remains highly sought after by crate diggers, yet unknown to jazz’s contemporary acolytes. In a first for the *Play Jazz* series, this volume also highlights the rich history of jazz music in so-called Australia with a tune by local guitarist John Scurry, connecting the dots between St. Louis and St. Kilda.

Both earnest and irreverent, intimate and extroverted, The Rookies offer an album that shines a light on the forgotten history of the music that shaped the modern era––an art form that continues to transmit an encoded message of humanity’s salvation. In an age of noise, The Rookies play jazz.

about

The Rookies Melbourne, Australia

The Rookies were born in the spring of 2014 on the forgotten end of Brunswick Street in a room full of sweat, beer and dim lights at The Rooks Return. What started as a quiet set of background jazz for punters while they imbibed their cocktails quickly devolved into an uninhibited, drunken dance party reminiscent of a time almost forgotten...

The Rookies are Jazz, but not like you know it.
