Drachenburg Castle was built between 1882 and 1884 by Baron Stephan von Sartert, a wealthy stockbroker. Although it looks medieval, it is actually a 19th-century palace combining Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance styles. The castle was never used as a defensive fortress; it was designed as a luxurious residence overlooking the Rhine River. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and an important example of German historicism architecture.
