Ocean 04:51
Who says there's a heaven And who needs a hell when We have the one we're in And we know it so well Who says there's a heaven And who needs a hell when We have the one we're in And we know all too well It's the weight of existence It's the air we must share With those blinded by greed All their fear and despair I don't wanna look But I'm not gonna look away Takes an ocean to love Takes a mountain to rise above Takes an ocean to love Takes a mountain to rise above Who says it's a sin To have a body that bleeds Or a soul that don't match With the body you're born in Who says it's a crime To seek a place to belong A future worth saving And a land to call home I'm not gonna turn I'm not gonna turn I'm not gonna turn away Takes an ocean to love Takes a mountain to rise above Takes an ocean to love Taken a mountain to rise above So stay tender and human and kind Always there by your side to remind you So stay tender and human and kind Always there by your side to remind you Takes an ocean to love Takes a mountain to rise above Takes an ocean to love Takes a mountain to rise above To rise above To rise above I'm not gonna run I'm not gonna run I'm not gonna run Away

Gavotte 03:16
Don't go, don't go near the edge Don't go, don't go near the edge They don't, they don't doubt my goodwill They don't, they don't doubt my goodwill It's very easy to meet English tourists in Spain We have not been able to find out his name This house, this house looks very much like ours This house, this house looks very much like ours It's very easy to meet English tourists in Spain We have not been able to find out his name His name You know you can count on me You know you can count on me You know you can count on me You know you can, you can count me I was dreaming of all of the places I have visited I was dreaming of all of the places I have visited

Plovers 03:38
Like a child fast asleep Like a song I couldn't keep Every moment's like a diamond in the deep Grove of trees, patch of land Tiny fingers in the sand I'm still dying to understand where I am In an ever changing view Amniotic blue Honey all I ever see is you Wading in the water Running fast, roaming free Stretching far as you could see May your heart beat like the Great Pacific Sea We'll be birds, you and me Snowy plovers on the beach Dizzy dancing with the seafoam in the breeze In an ever changing view Amniotic blue Honey all I'll ever need is you Wading in the water Wading in the water Wading in the water Wading in the water Wading in the water

Let It End 04:06
Somewhere down the line Feeling close to fine I'm learning all the time to swim ahead On seas of present tense Waves of recompense Shores that never ask you to pretend I'll never be the same Never be the same again I'll learn to mourn it all And let it end Time that does no harm Time to make amends Time to comprehend the days gone by I know I've looked the part In someone else's arc But now I've got to start to live for me I'll never be the same Never be the same again I've learned to let it go And let it in Show kindness to yourself Patience you would send The grace you would extend to an old friend Love that never smarts Love that never ends Love that never seeks to apprehend I'll never be the same Never be the same again Learn to mourn it all And let it end I'll never be the same Never be the same again Learn to let it go and let it in Learn to let it go and let it end

Falling in love with the rain On uncertain land Facing a fading refrain All that I had planned Walking for miles through a maze Under no command We're gonna need some time We're gonna need some time We're gonna need some time until We're singing with the radio on It reminds me that I'm never alone Even when we're living in our own time zones Whenever a light disappears Out into the sea Wherever my life reappears Whatever we'll be Deep in my heart I still believe Everyone's got to be free We're gonna make it right We're gonna make it right We're gonna make it out alive Together with the radio on It reminds me that I'm never alone Even when we're living in our own time zones With the radio on It reminds me that I'm never alone Even when we're living in our own time zones Picking it up from the very first line and I'm Speaking their names out from every location Crossing the bridge for the rest of my days and Singing with the radio Pushing the weight to the top of that hill and I'm Lifting their names up from every location Keeping the fire for the rest of my life and Singing with the radio Singing with the radio on Radio on

Blue 04:15
Untie the weight and float away Drift from the space between the landing and the bay Cerulean, remember what our life was all about? Nice to see you, so glad to meet you, and Blue was the color of our days Blue, don't know how we got this way Blue, wonder where I'd be without you Beneath the stars she sings with me Buried deep within my heart in the debris Azure waves, remembering every friend along the way Nice to know you, so glad we knew you, and Blue was the color of my world Blue, every time I'd start to fall Blue, see you standing there beside me Picking up the pieces of the way we were before Is it ever coming back, are we ever coming back? Blue And blue is the color of our dreams Blue, so much closer than it seems Blue, and I'm so grateful you were with me Blue Blue Blue

Hidakamura 03:21
Meet me in the country house Where the mountains open up And the sun will hang so high above In the town I love Nestled in the morning fog In translucent paper walls In the hills where persimmons grow in fall When I come to call Hidakamura When I’m tired of trying To hold my place in line When I lose my self between two worlds I find That I think of you And I know it’s true Here’s where I belong Only in the quiet hours Of the land where I was born All my memories always linger on In my mother’s arms In my mother’s arms Hidakamura

Hidden fortress, a castle in the sky While everyone in between dies Give me one reason, just send us a sign Oh something to tell us we'll be alright Cities and empires could last for a while But nothing gold stays in the half light Beautiful dreamer, how we used to smile Will anything good of our hearts survive? Passing the pain on from father to son While everyone views it in real time Mother for mother, a child for a child How many more ‘til we are satisfied? What are we gonna do? What are we coming to? Brother for brother, an eye for an eye How many more ‘til you are satisfied?

Adamantine 05:14
Homicide, suicide, Riverside In the house I called my home Circling wedding ring made of gold Engraved, but with no stone Praise to the jewel in the lotus Om Mani Padme Hum An absence still serves to remind us Om Mani Padme Hum Lose a few, save a few, lose once more Never same as was before The algae blooms in swimming pools, life unfurls What I was, I am no more Praise to the jewel in the lotus Om Mani Padme Hum Ten thousand words to restore us Om Mani Padme Hum Om Mani Padme Hum Inside the stone of my heart Inside, a stone, when the world's blown apart Inside the stone of my heart Laws may collapse The body may wither and die But I'll survive Rise before the shrine Breathe, and sleep, and rinse the rice And write And write And write, recite Om Mani Padme Hum

Wild Caught 03:25
It's not what you had thought I know it's not what you were taught I know that it's all very fraught with meaning But I liked it quite a lot When my mother mixed mayo with shallot And a can of starkist tuna's always wild caught You must think I've lost the plot 'Cause it's all I have, it's all I’ve got It's all that I have brought to your picnic We could eat it for Shabbat I'll show you the store where it was bought This can of starkist tuna's always wild caught Always, always Always is a strong claim We got different families, different names Different towns from where we came But I think you'd like it if you gave a shot To starkist tuna's always wild caught Starkist tuna's always wild caught Starkist tuna's always wild caught Starkist tuna's always wild caught

When I hear the opening refrain of Tomo Nakayama’s unadorned, a cappella vocals which guide me into his new album Ocean, all else falls away. I find myself attuning with all of my senses and attention to his voice. Like a singular drop of water, it merges with the vastness of an oceanic imagery and soundscape that pulls the focus from the microcosmic out to the larger world. Awash in images of the Pacific, the sea and its many hues become metaphors for the vastness of love, human connection, and our capacity to clearly see and be one with the world.

Ocean was recorded in Spring 2025 in Nakayama’s studio apartment in West Seattle. The album brings Nakayama’s band and guests together to explore and improvise with acoustic instruments in real time. The songs collected here grew out of deep collaborations and conversations with artists and friends.

In this collection of ten songs, we wade into the waters of being both of and alongside the world. In the birder’s joyful search for snowy plovers and the self-knowledge of one who has come to know that a mature and expansive love is one that never seeks to apprehend. In song after song of remembrance, gratitude, and care, we encounter the comfort of resting in another’s regard and being held with a tenderness that is the world itself. There is much to mourn and yet there is much to live for, as mirrored back to us in songs that memorialize and remember the connections that remind us of how only love can endure in the face of unspeakable loss.

I have often turned to Tomo’s music for comfort and care during difficult times. The artist’s gaze is one that meets his subjects with deep care, open eyes and open heart. A poet among songwriters, I appreciate the emotional directness of Tomo’s songs which are crafted around subjects that speak to grief while also sounding the call to the responsibility that we must all bear as humans born into this time and place – a bodhissatva vow to be of, and with, the world in deep and ongoing engagement. Tomo’s music invites you as a listener to turn towards feeling. In his songs, we are reminded to never abandon the self, alongside honoring the communion that we cultivate with the human and more-than-human realms.

Tomo’s song “Adamantine” was inspired by my poetry book by the same name and bookends this collection. Echoing back to the concerns and commitments in my own creative work, Tomo both asks and answers the question of how we can keep going in a deeply divided world where terrible beauty exists alongside resistance and points us towards being more fully awake. As these songs wash over you, consider what it feels like to be attuned to another, while holding space for your own heart. What might it look like to join with the world, instead of holding the self apart from it?
