2026 is the year we finally make sonic a symbol of fighting back against opression
I remember at the beginning of my writing career YouTubers used to condemn and demonize pantsing as a genuine process and would say shit like “You should never treat your characters like real people, you should never not write something or be upset because your characters are acting against you, they are NOT real people. YOU should write despite the fact that your NOT REAL CHARACTERS want the plot to be this or that.” People would swear that we’re stupid babies who didn’t know how to plot and that all pantsers should convert to plotting, the only Good and Right Way to Make Book. Plotting to them meant rigid structures that would kill any sort of creative thinking before we got to the page. Plotting meant good structure, a story that sold, admirable book deals. But then we tried it, and it never worked. We got nowhere with it. Drafts stayed drafts. We didn’t get a single book out. If you were like me, you were in denial of your pantsing.
For a while, we stopped.
But then we realized that was a bunch of steaming bullshit. Writing is not simply work. It is a medium that breathes and ebbs on its own. Your characters sometimes know better than you in some cases. Sometimes a plot isn’t working because we were working against it. Plotting is not the end all, be all, Books sell regardless of the way you plot, or lack there of.
So listen to your characters. They can be real.
