the name's Heresy Twink-Wizard. it's double barreled - i'm from the noble line of Twinks on my father's side and the renegade Wizards on my mother's. warring families, as many in the aristocracy are. the Twinks are known for their proficiency in the arts, their flamboyant charm and passion for well-taylored suits. perhaps this is what first attracted my mother to my father, alongside his profound beauty (which, as you will see, i naturally inherited). my mother tired of the ways of the Wizards, who were traditionally a cunning bunch, whispering in the ears of government figures and meddling in politics with their spells. she wanted instead to use her powers for good. and so she and my father ran away together, in defiance of conformity to a failed society, and not long after my father became the first documented case of human mpreg. i bear both of my parents' names to symbolise unity. i have inherited my father's flamboyance and my mother's magic; truly, i am a Twink Wizard. please, sit by the fire and allow me to show you some funny posts on tumblr dot com.

"Wake Up Dead Man", and the thankless labor of women

One of the things that stayed with me the most, was reflecting on traditional gender roles in the Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude congregation and how it relates to religion in general.

Vera halts her life to raise a child she has no moral obligations towards. Simone is the church's biggest donor, keeping it operable basically by herself. Martha is the only employee handling administrative work in the church, keeping the treasure a secret her whole life. They are all endlessly devoted. They are all meant to be contrasts of Grace, the real "women of God," and in the end, it's thankless labor from all of them.

Vera's adopted brother is a selfish jackass who appreciates nothing about what she did for him. He saw her as just a free nanny to be "dumped" once his real father showed up.

Simone is being prayed on at her weakest and used as a cash cow, only to be told she can't be healed because she's a faithless woman.

And Martha only realises at the tail end of her life that her selfless devotion to a man and his teachings meant nothing to him. That he betrayed her the first chance he gets.

Wicks sees himself as blameless, has no standard for his own behavior. He's a disgusting, horrible man, who deserves none of their devotion.

When Vera and Martha realize that their whole life they trusted the story of the "harlot whore", only to experience the exact same treatment even after doing everything in their power not to be like her, that's the first time they can reflect on her, and when they finally realize:

"That poor girl."

i saw ppl dunking on this woman on here a while ago which is crazy bc regardless of ur thoughts on taylor swift skipping work is literally awesome

Do you have yuri manga recommendations?

sure! 🌟 off the top of my head i have historically enjoyed:

  • run away with me, girl by battan - what if you were pregnant and in an abusive marriage and your ex-girlfriend from high school reappeared in your life... would you run away with her, girl...
  • fatale game by battan - i am not fully caught up with this yet but, again, battan’s art is stunning, her characters are compelling, and the premise (toxic yuri between a mangaka and her editor) is sooooo fun to me
  • rica ’tte kanji?! by rica takashima - in general i recommend her work! this one is a silly slice-of-life about lesbian culture and antics in 90s tokyo
  • office romance: women’s division by akiko morishima - cute, lighthearted office romance featuring a bisexual main character. yay!
  • sakura no sono by akimi yoshida - a high school theater club at an all girls school prepares to put on a production of the cherry orchard, a play by anton chekov. some of the students have complicated relationships and puppy love crushes on each other. (this manga was later adapted into one of my favorite movies ever, the cherry orchard dir. shun nakahara!)
  • how do we relationship? by tamifull - this is a fairly long series that finished serialization last year! well-written romantic comedy/drama with complex characters and realistic arcs. the art is also very nice
  • oniisama e by riyoko ikeda - not yuri exactly but certainly foundational for the genre. everyone in this is insane which makes it kind of like a train wreck you can’t look away from in the best way
  • farewell, my rose garden by dr. pepperco - historical romance between a british noblewoman and her japanese maid. pretty art and solid story and grounded in reality with regards to the time period
  • yuri espoir by mai naoi - a frothy collection of yuri vignettes brought together by the tragic framing narrative of a girl set to enter an arranged marriage heartening herself through keeping a yuri sketchbook
  • 2DK, G-pen, alarm clock by yayoi ohsawa - two roommates get together! one of them is an office worker! ruminations on heteronormativity and marriage as a milestone in a country where gay people cannot marry!

to be on the safe side, i am issuing a blanket statement that some of these works may be dated as per their release dates, that several deal with sensitive themes (homophobia, sexual assault, patriarchal violence, et cetera) i recommend you be cognizant of, and that i have not read or individually vetted the respective oeuvres of each mangaka on this list. have fun reading 🤍🦪
