Helpful service from Jay
Jay was very helpful throughout the process of comparing different options and seeing what was best for us at our location. Friendly and knowledgeable, but without being pushy. Product itself is fully-featured and positioned as a more premium offering in the POS space.

Very Helpful
I had a couple of problems using my new card reader for the first time. I reached out to them and received a very polite, respectful and helpful response first time. Definitely recommend.

Don't join Sumup use Square
We were with sumup, and they were terrible, and found very quickly they were not for us.
Square made joining easy, and they helped with the set up and explained could be done on phone and not needing a machine.
10/10
Terrible experience! AVOID!!
I would give this company zero if I could! What a sham, or should I say scam! For two years, yes, two years I have tried to cancel my subscription and it has been absolutely impossible. To cancel your subscription, you need to log into your account and surprise, surprise, they have made it impossible for me to log in!! First of all, my attempts to login told me I needed to join my Square account with Weebly. To do that though, I needed to log in. I couldn't log in without receiving the message: 'To login, you need to connect your Square account with Weebly'.
Somehow, I managed to find an email address, and I got some very complicated instructions on how to connect my Square account with Weebly but how do you do that if you can't login!!?? Having spent too long tearing my hair out I chalked the £34.95 subscription as a loss, but now it's due again, I started over. Back to SQUARE one!!
Can't log in. Tried the email address I used before but I was told I needed to log another complaint as too much time had passed. I can't find how to log the complaint and I still can't login. They told me to contact support. I can't contact support because I can't login and you have to login to contact support. I sent an email to the same address asking them to take it as official notice that I want to cancel my subscription (it was well within the 14 days required for cancellation) and I would be contacting my bank to stop money from being taken. Zero response! I contacted my bank who have advised me that they have done their best to flag and stop this payment, but it's likely they will still try to take the money and best to try and contact Square again. They have said however, that if they do now try and take money, I am to contact my bank again, and they will raise a dispute. The bank will see it as fraud/theft.
I thought I'd try and contact Square again to inform that I have now spoken to my bank who will see any attempts made on my account as fraud/theft, but same thing happening again. I tried their support phone number, but an automated voice said 'I'm sorry, we cannot find an account linked to this phone number'. What??? I have had the same number for over two decades and I signed up with an email address, so why isn't that an option on your automated calls?? I am beyond frustrated and furious because this is absolutely disgusting! I have hit wall after wall with this and got nowhere. It seems to me that an online company providing services for online business knows EXACTLY what it's doing. How many £34.95s have they got away with worldwide?? Don't touch them.

Absolutely unacceptable service from Square.
I have been working in the trade for nearly 20 years and run a well-established, successful carpentry and bespoke joinery business. We have a significant and legitimate online presence across multiple platforms, including Instagram, Google, TikTok, Facebook, and our own professional website. Our reputation and workload speak for themselves.
We joined Square in November specifically to accept card payments from our customers. Every single job we undertake is fully documented, supported by formal contracts provided in PDF format on company letterhead, along with corresponding invoices for each project.
In mid-January, we took our very first deposit payment through Square. The payment processed without issue, and we awaited clearance as expected. Shortly afterwards, Square suspended the transfer and requested additional information about our business. While inconvenient, this was understandable given it was our first transaction.
However, the level and nature of the information requested was excessive and unreasonable. Square demanded extensive details about the business and even required us to submit signed client contracts containing sensitive personal information. Despite serious concerns about privacy, we complied fully and promptly.
After waiting three working days, we received an email stating that Square could no longer offer us their services, that our account would be closed, and that any funds held would be retained for 90 days in case of chargebacks. This decision was astonishing, particularly given this was our first ever transaction and there had been no dispute, complaint, or issue whatsoever.
We were then given the option to refund the customer in full through Square, which we reluctantly chose. As a professional company with a strong public reputation, this was deeply embarrassing. We were forced to go back to the client and explain that we could no longer accept payment via Square and would need to use an alternative method—through absolutely no fault of our own.
Square managed to turn what should have been an exciting, high-value project into an unnecessary and humiliating administrative ordeal.
This raises serious questions: why was proper due diligence not carried out before allowing us to take payments? Why permit a transaction to proceed, only to then interrogate the business and abruptly terminate the account afterwards?
The lack of transparency, poor communication, and complete disregard for the impact on legitimate businesses is staggering. This experience has cost us time, credibility, and unnecessary stress.
I would not recommend Square to any serious tradesperson or business owner. There are far more reliable, professional alternatives available—Tide being one example—that understand how to work with established businesses rather than obstruct them.
Square’s handling of this situation was thoroughly disappointing and unprofessional.
