Smartest choice I made in trusting…

Smartest choice I made in trusting Trupanion as my pet insurance company. Three dogs, one with allergies and arthritis, one with lymphoma and one with car sickness! Covered by Trupanion on all medical expenses and I only pay 10% of the cost when taking them to the vet for injections, chemotherapy, medications and more. I also like the fact that your veterinarian can bill Trupanion up front rather than submitting the claim yourself. It saves so much and I'm truly grateful for Trupanion's coverage. Highly recommend!

Way to expensive if you have a healthy pet

I’ve had Trupanion for several years and initially felt good about the coverage, but the way they price policies has become increasingly frustrating. Their model evaluates your premium based on other pets in your area of the same breed, age, and gender — essentially a “people paying into the same pot” philosophy. While I understand how risk pools work, the reality is that my premiums have risen dramatically even though my own dog’s claims and health history haven’t changed.

In just the past few years, my rate has increased 16%, and most recently another 19.5%. The only explanation provided is that costs are rising due to claims from similar dogs in my geographic area. In other words, responsible pet owners can end up subsidizing the misfortune of others nearby, with very little transparency or control. There hasn’t been a clear breakdown showing why these increases are necessary or how they’re calculated beyond general statements about regional trends.

I chose this insurer expecting stability and predictability over time, especially given the already higher monthly premium compared to competitors. Instead, the year-over-year increases have made the policy feel less sustainable and harder to justify, particularly when they’re not tied to my pet’s actual usage.

Coverage itself may be solid, but prospective customers should go in understanding that premiums can rise significantly based on factors outside your control, including the claims history of other pets in your area. If you’re looking for long-term cost stability or transparency in pricing, it’s worth asking detailed questions and comparing options before committing.

No payment sent.

I submitted our puppy's surgery he had 3 lumps removed costing almost 2000.00 they separated all three lumps into three deductibles and didn't pay me a penny. I have 800.00 deductible so I was expecting some reimbursement but GOT NOTHING. Do not recommend this company

We had to take out dog to the emergency…

We had to take out dog to the emergency hospital for an illness and the pre approval and instant payment features were wonderful. Really takes the stress off of us know that we weren’t staring down a large vet bill so we could make better decisions for our dog.

Horrible experience overall

Horrible experience overall. Paid them over 11,000$ in monthly fees over the last 5 years for my 90% coverage as payments continue to increase annually. Haven’t covered a single penny since filing claims over the last 5 years stating condition was “pre existing.” Even denied vet approval for appealing claim as the vet argued it was in fact not pre existing. They took 1 hour to come back with a paragraph denial stating appointment notes all dated 5 years AFTER being insured. Absolute horrible service and waste of money as I’ve spent years paying for insurance and for vet bills and medications for my pet . Cancelled promptly after appeal denial will not be getting another cent. Absolutely Do not recommend. Save you monthly payment to use if anything shall occur with your pet rather than wasting 2k a year for absolutely nothing in hopes they will cover something.

Overpriced and over rated

Paid for 2 months at $100+ each month for them to take their time getting records and reviewing them only to tell me they wouldn’t cover future joint issues because my dog had a torn toenail in the past causing him to limp. I could appeal and have the vet to call to explain while I continued to pay the monthly fee waiting on their decision. I do not recommend this company at all for anything, they are only after your money!
