Comparing some of the more famous McDonnell and McDonnell Douglas fighters. To put this in perspective, the F-4 Phantom was roughly twice the size and nearly four times the weight of the FH-1 Phantom.

Btw from the F-101 to the F-15 and F/A-18, McAir really did produce the who’s who of our generation’s fighter jets.

Here we see an F-4B Phantom II on the carrier deck with its nose gear fully extended. This hydraulic extension raised the nose several degrees, giving the wings extra angle of attack for takeoff. It was a unique feature for carrier operations.
