The nonsensical finale of Stranger Things and the erratic behavior of Matt and Ross Duffer should be setting off alarm bells right now. They are not isolated incidents, but speak to a larger goal of discouraging critical thought from the general public.

Over the last decade, the writers and other individuals involved with the project have stated that there were no coincidences in the show and that it was meant to be analyzed. However, in the end, very little thought was given to the series and the majority of connections that could be made were coincidental. The Duffers were indeed winging the story and writing the safest slop possible to maintain the interest of a mainstream audience.

So why did they claim that the show was deeper? It's a smokescreen. In the end, every character motivation was straightforward and ended in the way the character imagined it would. Will thinks he can't be in a romantic relationship with Mike, and he's correct. El believes she needs to sacrifice herself to end the cycle of abuse, and that's exactly what she does. Mike states that he doesn't want to have anymore regrets, and ends up with nothing but regrets.

By stating the outcome of each character's storyline and following through on the character's exact prediction, the audience is (wrongfully) led to believe that they had accurately predicted the course of the story because of their critical thinking abilities. It tricks the audience into believing that they were the ones who pieced the narrative together. Essentially, it rewards passivity and a complete lack of thought with undue praise to the viewer's intelligence. They gave absolutely zero consideration to the story besides trusting what had been stated previously as the given outcome, and are rewarded with being "correct" for not expecting any surprises.

On the flip side, the Duffers have now begun demonizing the individuals who took their words to heart. The people who actually did analyze the story in front of them are being harassed and mocked for simply utilizing the critical thinking skills that were necessary to understand complex narratives from media in the past.

This is all intentional. The people who were simply along for the ride and took the narrative at complete face value are being told they are intelligent and that the amount of thought they gave to the story (none) is correct. People should not delve deeper or expect any sort of follow through based off of the literary conventions that have existed for centuries. Individuals who utilized critical thinking skills are wrong, and should be shamed and discouraged from their inappropriate behavior.

Media plays a key role in driving the masses. It is a way in which to push certain narratives and societal expectations on to the general public. As a popular show, Stranger Things is being used as a tool to push forward homophobia, misogyny, racism, and surface level thinking. It is being used to shame the very demographics that it claimed to represent.

Do not accept this. Make your feelings about the bigotry and lack of quality presented within this show known. Continue to pursue knowledge, to read, to stimulate your mind and express your creativity. Do not become a passive spectator who takes things at face value and neglects the stimulation that human beings need to be whole, healthy, and complete.

I'm still proud of the long analyses I've made discussing Will Byers and female horror tropes and how that interacts with his queerness. I stated before in those analyses that all of those choices were likely subconscious rather than intentional and given this finale that is likely the truth 😂

Will Byers, I still adore you as a horror-heroine-gay-boy that the Duffers accidentally created. Wish things could have been better written for you.

i feel like people forget how central byler is to the whole show. the first and second season are literally about mike's love for will – not even in a romantic way, but there's straight up DEVOTION there in everything MIKE does. he sees will's body pulled out of the lake and can't even accept that it's him and HE'S RIGHT. mike's love for will is literally so important but the duffers threw it out the window and treated it like it was nothing. even if they didn't want byler to happen, they could've handled it so much better. but they're cowards, so scared to make things gay that they couldn't even give the storyline a proper resolution. they couldn't even treat that FRIENDSHIP with the dignity it deserved and the weight that it's always had in previous seasons

someone on tiktok said it best, they BROKE all their own rules of storytelling, all the rules that were established in canon got destroyed, and that's such an enormous betrayal of your fan base it's heartbreaking

Exactly, that's why the fanbase is crashing out so bad, whether some people want to awknoledge it or not.

Like, I hope you don't mind me being an unbearable nerd under your post for a minute, but the actual problem is that they broke the narrative pact. They broke the suspension of disbelief.

I saw people complain that we're nitpicking but honestly, no. Just no.

It's not just all the inconsistencies, it's not just the uncountable production mistakes (assuming they were actually mistakes), it's not even forgetting their own lore or trying and failing at subverting the tropes (if that even was the goal, I still don't understand what they were trying to do with that finale).

It's actively betraying the foundational themes of their own story, dumbing down their own monsters/villains and abandoning their characters, reducing them to stereotypes, love interests, plot devices and GODDAMN allegories.

They stopped justifying the characters' decisions and they stopped creating credible reasons for why certain things were the way they were. As a result the ending feels fake.

There's a reason if conformitygate became so big and it's because the finale is so ridiculous compared to the previous seasons that people genuinely couldn't believe they fucked up so bad.

and this is precisely why it’s not just people ‘being mad that byler didnt happen’

by the time s5 dropped, i did NOT ship byler anymore and got off the bus fully after the scene where Will tried to flirt with Mike but Mike didn’t reciprocate. And yet, I still fully expected to cringe as hell WHEN they became canon in the finale bc, taking past seasons into account, it sincerely felt like it was inevitable. i just thought it would be poorly written, like the rest of the season was.

but instead they NERFED byler to the point it is NOTICEABLE even their FRIENDSHIP was watered down??? and for what??? it gives such whiplash bc they did NOT give that storyline resolution at ALL ( the fact Noah had to ask for that tower scene multiple times ………………… )

byler not being endgame is a consequence of the decline in writing quality, not the reason why we’re mad.

i dont even know if im mad, im just disappointed and confused as hell because … why??? just why?????
