Edward Gorey (USA, 1925-2000)
Cat Fancy, 1993
Original cover illustration created for The New Yorker magazine
Watercolor, graphite, & ink on paper
280 x 215 mm (11 x 8 ยฝ in.)
โNotes: one of only two published new yorker covers by gorey. The first, featuring a family trimming a bizarre, leafless tree with poinsettia wrapping paper, appeared on the December 21, 1992 Christmas week cover. This second watercolor languished in their archives until just recently. In her December 3, 2018 Cover Story column โEdward Goreyโโs `Cat Fancy,โโ New Yorker art editor Franรงoise Mouly tells how she rediscovered the illustration this past autumn upon the submission of an appreciation of the illustrator by Joan Acocella which was occasioned by the recent biography of Gorey by Mark Dery ("Born to Be Posthumous: The Eccentric Life and Mysterious Genius of Edward Gorey,โ Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 2018). The tight cross-hatching, detailed textile patterns, and presence of his favorite pets make this a quintessential Gorey artwork.โ

Hey maybe you guys should stop writing for the Addams family cause you donโt get them at all.
Imagine my girl Morticia saying that shit in any other portrayal? NO? Because she wouldnโt.
Also Gomez knows heโs not โin charge.โ They have an equal partnership, but if, for some reason, Morticia said โI want to be in charge, what I say goes,โ heโd literally say โanything, cara miaโ and thatโd be the end of it. He doesnโt need to be โin charge.โ Heโs not that kind of man.
Iโm so annoyed with that series because I do like some aspects of it but MY GOD they get so much shit wrong.
Iโm almost finished with the second season and I kept wrinkling my nose at it. Theyโre equals and always have been.
Everything Iโve heard about the mischaracterization of the original characters is why I wonโt watch it.
If you donโt like the characters as they were originally written and donโt plan to stay true to who they are, take their names off of the project. Stop pretending theyโre the Addams family.
If you donโt think your show will do well without the franchise connection, then I think you understand why we wouldnโt want the franchise connected to it.
The whole point of The Addams Family is that it took shitty sexist sitcom jokes like this, about domineering wives and submissive husbands, and it threw out all of the derision and deception and sexism. Instead it just fully embraced these concepts with wide open arms and a gloriously ecstatic love. Itโs first and foremost premise was that this is a loving and healthy relationship, not in spite of but precisely because it is totally antithetical to every normative suburban stereotype.
This ainโt that.

Last week I asked my dad if he remembers sneaking me into the cinema to see Deep Rising in 1998. He said he thought so but didnโt remember which cinema it was. He was stunned that I not only remembered the exact cinema but also the time of day and the shirt I was wearing.
Today I forgot what someone told me over the phone even though the conversation ended 3 seconds ago.
โMy memory is like a chalkboard and someone else has the eraser while another someone else writes random things in permanent marker instead of chalk.โ

I live by the motto, โif you canโt buy what you want, make it.โ And this motto came to life recently in the form of a floral mosaic dining table for my back deck.
Our deck table had been showing its age already when the wind caught the umbrella and cracked it. I wanted to replace it with a mosaic table because Iโd been enjoying that art form recently. But I couldnโt get one the size I wanted so I got creative.
I spent a few weeks looking for tile and figuring out a very loose design concept. I started by picking a limited set of tile shapes and a color palette.
Once the tiles arrived I had a piece of particle board cut to size for the base and I experimented with different motifs until I settled on a selection of floral shapes that gave me plenty of variety to fill space without locking me into one repeating pattern.
And then I was off! I basically doodled my way around the table, attaching tiles with Weld Bond (I went through 4 full bottles!) and rocking out to the K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack.
Once the florals were done it was time for the backgroundโฆ
Over 3,800 1cm glass tiles make up the not-design part of the design. It went pretty quickly though because I just had to fill the space, leaving room for grout.
Once I had the tile done, my husband assisted with disassembly and reassembly. We used the legs off the original table for this one (waste not).
One huge bucket of black grout laterโฆ
She is finished.
I enjoyed making it and just looking at it makes me so happy - I canโt wait for all the dinners weโll have around this table ๐ผโค๏ธ
