The Director-General of the World Health Organization goes on to state: "only 50% of Gaza's health facilities are partially functional and they face shortages of essential supplies and equipment."

This is the reality facing my friend Fadel. He has been in and out of Gaza hospitals over these years.

First, he was rushed to the hospital after almost dying when Israelis bombed his house while he was still inside. The surgeons could not remove all of the shrapnel embedded in him, and urged him to get to a better resourced hospital outside of Gaza.

In September, he was hospitalized again after inhaling toxic gas shells and smoke during forced displacement. In November he was again in the hospital for severe pneumonia, a severe cold, weakness, and a low blood cell count. It's nearing the end of December and he is still struggling to recover.

Fadel (@fadel-dani) tells me he suffers all the time from a high fever and keeps dropping unconscious. He has a severe anemia at this point.

I know that it's impossible to truly comprehend the enormity of death and destruction in Gaza. We cannot wrap our minds around the numbers of the martyred, injured, displaced, homeless, and starving.

Perhaps simplifying and presenting in fractions might help. Imagine being in a room of 33 people. Half are children. Now imagine an explosion hits. One of those people is dead. Three are disabled by injury. 30 of you discover your homes are destroyed.

Ahmed is one of the children. His home is destroyed, and his family is living in a tent that has been repeatedly flooded by winter storms. They have all been sick for weeks and unable to recover because they cannot afford medicine. He is disabled but there is no treatment left in Gaza. He has only raised €6,131 so far, because only 295 people have donated to him.

In 2025, Ahmed has been forcibly displaced multiple times, making the distance by foot while carrying all of his belongings because his family could not afford fuel. He has been starved and shot at while trying to get food. He has been denied access to clean water for months. He has been kept up with gunfire, floods, and illness.

Now Israel is banning aid organizations. Every time aid is blocked, the price of supplies soars. Price gouging reaches incomprehensible levels as dying people pay anything for enough food to survive another day.

My friend Fadel is living out of a tent with his family. The wind is strong. This morning he told me "we are today trying to hold our tent so it doesn't all rip and fly."

Those of you following me for a while will remember that Fadel survived Israelis bombing his house while he was inside. He was taken to the hospital, but the destruction of the healthcare system in Gaza meant that they could not surgically remove all of the shrapnel from his body.

His whole family has been very sick this winter, and unable to recover because of the lack of medicine and shelter from these repeated storms. He told me earlier how painful having a cold is in this state:

"when I sneeze, I feel like the iron fragments are moving in my body 😭😭. I'm so tired. I just sneezed, and there's a lot of pain in my wounds. I don't know how long we're gonna be like this."

On Christmas I read a report stating that "nearly all of Gaza’s hospitals and healthcare facilities have been attacked" leaving over 125 health facilities severely damaged. A Palestinian human rights org is preparing for a looming health catastrophe as the al-Awda Hospital in central Gaza is running out of fuel.

Fadel urgently needs surgery, but this has been delayed and delayed. The hospitals in Gaza simply do not have the resources to treat him. The only way is to travel with his family outside of Gaza so that he can receive surgery.

But with what money? All of the donations have gone towards bare survival, and he does not even have enough to afford medicine for his family to treat their illness. They are struggling just to raise enough to stay fed and warm.
