Coming in April 2025 on Clearly Records: Working Batterie

A collaboration between multi-instrumentalist producer Pierre de Gaillande and legendary bassist Mike Watt. “Batterie” is the French word for drum set, and the rythmic power source that keeps the musical engine running.

Each track began with a rhythm foundation from a different drummer, followed by Watt’s signature basslines, then expanded through contributions from an all-star lineup of world-class musicians. The result is a stunning collection that runs the gamut from art-rock to jazz to punk, all rooted in a foundation of “batterie" and bass.

    Featured Collaborators:
    Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo)
    Tony Scalzo (Fastball)
    Nels Cline (Wilco)
Kenny Wollesen (Tom Waits, John Zorn)
Robert Walter (Roger Waters, Greyboy Allstars)
    ...and many more

The sounds of war make it hard to think The smell of death in the heat There’s no more food nothing left to drink I‘m walking down an empty street I’m right there, just out of frame Another face without a name Amid the rubble, the ashes and dust Everyday there’s less of us I wake up to a fire fight It happens almost every night I feel like I was born to die And I can’t see the reason why So I dare to raise my fist Against a power I can’t resist I struggle to simply exist For this I’m called a terrorist It’s right there on the front page Another awful war to wage Amid the fighting the truth and the lies All the facts are left to die I go to sleep my will intact Resting for the next attack It’s getting hard to read the lines In between the white and black So I dare to take a stand Although I am only one man I share the power in my hand With all the people of this land I never chose this kind of life No one should be born to die How much killing has to be Until we can live in peace

Oh oh oh oh no no no no The Naxalites! The system of the caste keeps you enslaved So cast it off and break the chains The Naxalites prepare to fight Andrah Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar in West Bengal, In Chhattisgarh Untouchables, invisible Red corridor from shore to shore Mahatma called for hunger strikes Truth and love and self-reliance But inequality persists So we must stand up and resist The Naxalites are here to fight Take back the land reclaim your rights There’s too much war and too much hate Majumdar has been betrayed Naxalbari has split the party Now the Greyhounds hunt the PWG The Naxalites are here to fight Take back the land reclaim your rights It’s annihilation line, just step right up and die The dance will never end, so here we go again The Naxalites are here to fight Take back the land reclaim your rights What’s the lesson to be learned For those of us who are concerned There’s too much blood and too much war What is all this fighting for Mohandas called for love and light So how should we prepare to fight? Naxalites!

We get what we deserve It’s us who we don’t serve We cannot all come together You’ll never keep it together Algorithm cast aside We’ll open it up wide Feed the void, feed the void Shall we gather unto us all the disbelievers Knowing if we don’t, we’re under the bus And we’ll get that fever again Draw your weapons in the dust Like a line in the sand Feed the void feed the void Shall we gather unto us all the disbelievers Taking the piss, they’ve voided our trust Our fever’s breaking again Have we given it enough time Take and take who draws the line Same mistake we’re out of time Shall we gather unto us all the disbelievers Knowing if we don’t we’re under the bus And we’ll get that fever again Push down and twist

While you were sleeping While you were idle One heart was open Nobody’s idol Spilling the ink on the unholy scripture These crooked songs paint perfect pictures One easy lesson, open your mind Open your eyes, live like you’re dying Driving a pitchfork into an earthquake Bludgeoning instrument, exquisite headache Voice like an iceberg splitting the night Yelling the lesson; live like you’re dying Crushing the sunshine into a potion Drink it or drip it into the ocean Art is the noose, cash is the rope Inside the cracks in the teeth is the hope Museum windows are open wide Liars on fire for sale inside Take what you want no one is watching Open your eyes, live like you’re dying

about

OUT NOW on Clearly Records: a collaboration between Paris-born, New York-based, multi-instrumentalist producer Pierre de Gaillande and legendary bassist Mike Watt entitled Working Batterie.

Initiated from a conversation between Watt and de Gaillande on his Pierre Pressure Podcast, the concept for Working Batterie took form (inspired by the french word for drum set, “batterie,” and the rhythm section as the engine that drives music.) Every piece began as a rhythm track created by a different drummer, which Watt then played bass on, and it went from there as a collaboration with a far-reaching roster of world-class musicians.

Notable collaborators include Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo), Tony Scalzo (Fastball), Nels Cline (Wilco), Kenny Wollesen (Tom Waits, John Zorn), and Robert Walter (Roger Waters, Greyboy Allstars), among many others.

The result is a stunning collection of music that ranges from pop-rock to jazz-punk and every branch along the tree of music, all rooted in the compositional genesis of rhythm and bass.
