Love reading Lyall again, an interesting angle to take the story! Exploring post-change communication would be fun. Assuming he could establish it, I'm not sure how he'd be able to reunite with the bird crew, if they're even still around after a year. Perhaps when he heals and is released?
Personally, I would call this test a success! I think this fits in well as a sequel and doesn't take away from the solid ending you put into The Bird House. I love being able to come back and revisit characters like this. The talk about the stopper drug and how much he is in control does make me wonder how much control he has in comparison to anyone else who has gone through the change. I both do and don't want to know what happened to the others in the house. I suspect they've mostly or completely changed, but did they get any new birds in the house? Is the house still active, or has it become abandoned (something I would be sad to hear)? Has science found a way to improve the stopper or even to potentially reverse the change? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I love this world too much lol
Also, you got me going there for a second. I thought you were gonna write poor Lyall out of existence with that highway scene.
