Phil Miller is the author of From the Lives We Knew, a novel-length collection of tales told by refugees from the West Bank of Palestine, Kosovo, and Iraq, all with connections to one American couple.
A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Phil studied at Texas Christian University and Southern Methodist University. His occupations have included pastoral ministry, military chaplaincy, massage therapy, and nonprofit administration. He retired from the Air Force in 2010 with the rank of colonel.
His first book, Benjamin in the Forest: 80 Chattahoochee Tales, features conversations between a young boy and his Grandpa about trees, birds, and bugs in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The stories in that book previously appeared on his blog, Berry

Pitch In — Where?

No, I’m not talking about human vandals. It’s the bear, raccoon, or turkey vulture that would make a mess of the trash.


The “Adopt-a-Mile” sign on the county road features a cartoon figure dropping a wrapper into a trash can. It says, “Do Your Part, Pitch In.” If you think this sign literally lets drivers and their passengers know what to do with their litter, guess again.Litterbug2
