For example, there was a section where I needed to pass a lot of time - years where Lucia was living her life, but nothing was really changing. I just couldn’t see how I could get from where I was to where I wanted to jump to six or seven years later. I remember sitting on my bed, thinking, "I really don't know where to go with this," and "I'm never going to finish this!" Then I went to this talk Elizabeth Strout, and someone asked about these kinds of roadblocks, how to deal with them. She said, “Just keep writing.” That's it. So I did that. I wrote a bunch of words that got me from the middle of the book to the end - it was a bunch of filler, events that were kind of lame and unnecessary, and I knew it, but it didn't matter. The point was that it moved me from A to B, so I could keep writing. I ended up cutting most of it later, but by then it had served its purpose. I did that a lot throughout my numerous drafts. It turned out that a lot of stuff in those early drafts was just scaffolding. So I guess the answer is, just keep writing!

Now I’m at a different kind of writer’s block - because I’m trying to start a new project. I’m not sure yet how I’m going to move through this one!
