The first few pages were promising and then it went downhill and downhill it went, real fast. Any book with library in title or bookshop or other kind of “shop/store” ALWAYS draws me in.
Our main character, Dodie, (yes she’s a daydreamer) has some personal issues although she thinks everyone else has issues. Well, some of them do, but she basically wins the grand prize!
Wow, she is so self centered and blames everyone else for her despair. Yet, she on her own, creates an unauthorized “public community library” in her own home with her money and resources. She buys shelves, books and furniture for this “library.” She makes food and offers beverages for patrons of her library out of her own money. (People pleaser). She buys books for a kid that she attaches herself to because Elmira reminds her of herself. Ok this is weird. And she gets upset when Elmira tells her things about her parents that are not up to par for what Dodie believes should be perfect parent behavior. And so it is not up to DoDo, oh excuse me, I meant, Dodie’s personal fantasy parental standards. It’s almost like “her way or the highway.”
Her friend, Sullivan, adopts a baby from another country, but then there is a life event occurrence and ditzy Dodie wants to adopt the child, THAT specific child, because she has fallen in love with him, bonded with him but she has no money, no clue - knowledge or experience other than babysitting this child for short spurts - or has any idea what’s involved in raising a child especially on her own. All she has is that the baby is available, in her mind it SEEMS as if it’s only the right thing to do is for her to adopt this child.
When prospective adoptive parents show up for their interview of the child, Dodie is hiding and stalking them outside in the garden bushes so she can see if they are acceptable to her. Who the hell does she think she is? Truly, this one has issues. Well, she still thinks she can be a single parent to this baby because she subscribes to Parents magazines and reads them voraciously and keeps them hidden under her bed. What??? This is so lame. This is just so absolutely stupid.
The drama she creates with this baby situation is like a small child wanting a puppy because it’s so cute, with no realization what all is involved. Can I please have a puppy? Please, please, please? I promise I’ll take care of it! 😳
And so we have to keep hearing about her eggs, her biological time clock, how she wants a baby, THIS particular baby, etc.
She went to a doctor to affirm her fertility status and somehow based on what he tested her for and estimated her “ability to get pregnant phase” caused her to keep a calendar and obsessively looking at it, crossing off day by day and lamenting on how her time is running out. Ok so isn’t this what might be called obsessive compulsive behavior? And like her secretive Parents magazines, she keeps this “fertility calendar” under her bed. Gahhhh!
She meets a guy (also in a stupid way) and neither one of them know how to have a healthy relationship. They are both kooks, in my opinion. Neither knows how to talk to one another. Their “flirtation” is just so awful. They are not able to converse. They don’t always make eye contact. But...They end up in bed on their first date without even truly knowing much about each other. Which of course, causes relationship problems from the get go. Can we even call it a relationship? I’ve got more of a relationship with my houseplants! So Dodie went to bed with him because “it’s been such a long time” and she “needed her pipes cleaned.” 2nd Gahhh!!!
Dodie’s father walked out and left the family when she was little and this is like a constant niggling inside of her. After he left, Dodie and her sisters found out he was living right in their neighborhood with a new wife and kids. Of all the stupid drama. She calls him “NotDad.” Real mature, right? And of course, blames him for a lot of her issues and her family issues.
Everything this character, Dodie does - her family and friend relationships, her inability to communicate with others, her wanting to satisfy her needs by pleasing others, her lack of confidence in areas where she should have some kind of life skills and confidence, etc. was just a really big, big turn off to me. All the baby drama. Her unstable relationship with Shep. It’s not really even a relationship! Her off/on arguments with her one sister and lusting for a life that her other sister has. Their disappointing visit to NotDad. On and on it goes.
At the beginning of the story, Dodie lived in NY and had a boyfriend there and it’s not surprising the relationship did not last. He was a piece of work too. She also is a “budding” artist (?) but when hearing critiques by her at a gallery showing of her art, they were negative in style and of course she can’t handle that. When the boyfriend, who is very self centered, agrees with them, she comes crashing down hard and loses any tiny bit of semblance of confidence she may have had - which wasn’t much to begin with. And the name Dodie...nickname “Do” - this just suits her doddering character to a T. Good grief.
When her NY friend Sullivan, moves to a charming small town, away from NY, Dodie follows her out there to buy a house and settles in herself. The house she buys is not of any style, but “patched together” kinda like this story of book is. She cannot really afford it abut has mother come to her financial rescue, and later when all the bills start coming in, her expenses are already over her budget. So the reader has to hear about THAT latest irresponsible demise.
It’s all so immature. Not fun to read. This Dodie character doesn’t really have any goals or purpose. However when she does fixate on something, it’s to an obsession.
Here’s a remedial comment Dodie thought when Shep smiled at her, “He flashed a smile at me that flambeed my underwear.” Oh please! I know any one of us could write a better, sexier result than that! Flambeed underwear - what does that even look like?
No, I do not recommend at all! Horrible except for the very first few pages. Don’t get suckered in! It’s a Hot Mess! 🔥
