I got the paperback of this last month for my birthday. I read it yonks ago when it was first released but gave it another read and it stood the test of time!
I love a good psychological thriller, and this one fell into the category of excellent ones. Holy macaroni Batman! I did NOT see that twist coming in a million years! I just stared at the page whilst my brain scrambled to get some footing again. And it wasn't the only one. But the BIGGIE was done so very, very well.
A tragic accident. It all happened so quickly. She couldn't have prevented it. Could she?
In a split second, Jenna Gray's world descends into a nightmare. Her only hope of moving on is to walk away from everything she knows to start afresh. Desperate to escape, Jenna moves to a remote cottage on the Welsh coast, but she is haunted by her fears, her grief and her memories of a cruel November night that changed her life forever.
Slowly, Jenna begins to glimpse the potential for happiness in her future. But her past is about to catch up with her, and the consequences will be devastating...
It's so hard to talk anymore about the plot of this book without giving away the entire reason for the book so I am not going to do that.
All I will say is that the plot is cleverly written, with twists that I have already told you are amazing and plenty more surprise moments along the way. It's very clever with the way stories intertwine like rope to make for a very strong book overall. Fascinating. I was flicking pages wanting more of the story to reveal itself.
The characters in the book I thought were excellent, I felt I could relate to each of them as if I was there with them, in the story, including the peripheral characters as well. Some might find a bit of a hate/love with Jenna I think, for me, I reserved judgement on her until the end of the book.
It has some tense, thrilling and shocking moments in it, some you see coming, some you don't, but it's not a boring book by any means. I could not put it down once I got going and was so thrilled that it took me to places I did not predict it would. I had heard good things about this one but went in with no expectations.
All in all, a stunning and sometimes surprising novel with a powerful message running through it, a book that will quench your thirst for a novel you can at last just sink into and lose yourself completely. A book you will recommend to all your friends.
An easy five star read for me and one that has gone on my favourite's shelf. Nice work from Clare Mackintosh!

Just started this one. There are so many good ones out there at the moment! 2015 is turning out to be a good year for books.
Great review, seen this around a lot but wasn't sure if it was overhyped- it seems to be a good 'un so I looking forward to reading it!

It seemed reasonable to me, Kirstie. However, I was relieved to find the following comment by the author, in response to a question concerning a sequel: There won't be a sequel - at least I haven't planned one... I know there's a bit of a cliff-hanger (ha ha) at the end of I Let You Go, but I feel their stories are complete. Jenna has a happy ending, I promise :-)
x Clare
Does Jenna have a happy ending?? for me the last line 'And then it is dark' suggests not. I read this in 2 days. gripping. Gasped at ebd of part 1 then had to go back and re read to see why I had assumed it was as I thought! clever. found aspects of part 2 almost too sad to read. I cried. The only thing that annoyed me was the narrative concerning Ray and Kate. especially the number of times one if them grinned. I found this a bit Famous Five and not in keeping with the rest of the book.
I also really liked this book BUT I couldn't get past how similar it is to Sleeping With the Enemy. Same twists......so it was sort of predictable for me.
Love this review. When I started reading part two I wanted to start from the beginning again as I thought I missed something. What a brilliant twist. I decide to just carry on reading as I wanted to know what exactly happened. From part two onwards I couldn't stop reading anymore. The only thing is that I'm not too happy with the end. As I actually still don't know what happened in the end. I read the last sentences a few times to figure out what she meant but I'm still not sure. I so hope it's meant to be a happy ending but it doesn't seems like it!
This book really rolled me over and tied me down as well. I ended up feeling victimized and shivering in fear myself! LOVE your review, Maxine!
I was like a crazy woman, going back and re-reading passages from the beginning of the story to see how I could have missed "it". brilliantly done!
I so agree. I never saw the twist coming. I even went back and re-read the beginning thinking I missed something.
Reminded me too much of Sleeping with the Enemy and I hated the plotline with the cops. I thought it was going to eventually tie in with the car accident in some explosive way but it just fell flat and completely unnecessary to the story...Meh, disappointed in this one...
