it was amazing
Reading for the 3rd time. Most recently started July 29, 2022.

Maybe it's the inevitable melancholy of getting older, but reading this novel for the second time, roughly 13 years after the first go, has made me tremendously sad and despairing.

I would like to think the country is so much different 70 years after its publication, but is it?

Lynn I read it in high school and haven't had the heart to read it again. I'd say the mistrust I remembered isn't a bit dated.

I had completely forgotten about the scene where Bigger is on the run - so well written, so monstrous, very brutal.

Dolors Your response to Lynn reminds me of Toni Morrison, Brian. I still have to read Richard Wright, and I guess this is the perfect novel to meet him.

Debbie "DJ" Intriguing review! I'm sure the answer is no...will add, thanks!

Kelly This book was a required reading in high school and the only thing I remember about it is being so disturbed by the part where he puts the body in the trunk and bangs it down the stairs that I'm not sure I will ever be able to read it again! ;P

message 6: by Stephen (new)

Stephen P(who no longer can participate due to illness) Brian, recently reading about Sylvia Beach and her much famed, left bank Paris bookshop, Shakespeare and Company. She refers to Richard Wright as the writer and person who showed the most integrity and respectability. This included a vast number of famous, famous to-be writers. I had the sense that he had a formidable quiet strength.

Brian Thanks everyone for stopping by and your comments posted here. This is a very important book, even if it is something a reader ends up hating, and I hope those that haven't read it yet will pick it up!

Zoeytron I read this for the first time just a couple of years ago. Your feelings of sadness and despair upon finishing mirrored my own.

Candy Barr I am reading Ghettoside right now, and have only read Native Son a few months ago. Sadly, it seems that not much has really changed.

Jin Z Very true. It makes me sadder when I read negative review of this masterpiece because people still don't get it.
