it was ok
bookshelves: mystery-thriller-crime, japan

I keep hesitating between 1 and 2 stars... I'm going to be generous and say "it was ok" and it was entertaining enough that I kept reading till the end.
This is just my opinion, but I found "Out" to be poorly written and poorly constructed. Most characters and their reactions weren't credible at all, and the story completely lack of suspense or tension. It was more laughable than gripping.
Not my kind of book at all.

Layla It's like we read two different books lol. I actually thought this one was going on the hate list :). I liked this book because of the bleakness of the characters lives. The backbreaking factory work, their shitty homes/families, the constant grind with no appreciation etc. I've definitely seen people comment that the writing/translation might not be the best, but I didn't have a problem with it.
It would be boring if we liked the same things!! :)

Estelle Agreed. ;)
And yeah, it does feel like we've read different books, but I can see what you mean about the bleakness... I'm usually into that too.
Basically my main issue with Out is the total lack of subtlety. I don't think it's a problem of translation / writing style, it's more about the way Kirino chose to string together the scenes and all the crappy things that happen to those women. For me it was too heavy-handed and clumsy.

But obviously, you didn't have that feeling at all, you and many other people who love the book, so I'm sure she's doing something right.

Katie I ended up giving Out three stars. Mainly for the lack of a decent character and the appalling ending that was not explained in any way shape or form... (view spoiler)

In terms of the writing style - I think I could forgive it a little due to it being a translation and because every couple chapters or so, there did seem to be some stunning lines.

Vanessa I literally just finished reading your copy that you gave to me XD
