My god!!! What can I say about this book?? IT IS A BAD BOOK!!! It has bad cheesy prose, a snotty annoying (and kind of a bimbo) heroine and the cliched, brooding Byronic vampire hero, needless to say that the moment they lay their eyes upon each other they fall hopelessly in love. Oh yes!! I can't believe I almost forgot!!!!! The mother of all originalities... it also has a love triangle!!!! I think it's safe to say that this book is the poster book for cheesy YA pnr books and since it was written in 1991 it's even safer to say that the others copied L. J. Smith's tropes and not the other way around.
But did I enjoyed it? I am ashamed to admit it...but yes I did!!! This book is a guilty pleasure, pure silly escapism and I'm afraid I will be back for more...

message 9: by Johnny (new)

Johnny Yaacoub i just hated that she is selfish and feel that she can have anything and if she doesn't she will cry and feel that the world is against her ...it's different from the movie ...i'm comparing !

lol! Well Elena in the books -at least in this one- is a spoiled bratt, while Elena in the CW show is a martyr! I have to admit I love the show though.

message 11: by MizziQ (new)

MizziQ Well at least it wasn't false advertising. It DID say that it was a love triangle. That was the point of the book.

hahahhaha agreed, though compared to this one, Twilight probably was a liiiitle better!

message 17: by Sharon (new) - added it

Sharon Greene I rarely say this but I much prefer the tv series to the book.

I guess it was! Like I said in my review probably a lot of writers in the genre of YA pnr copied Smith's tropes

I used to love Elena in the beginning but by the end of season 6...I think, I couldn't stand her anymore, Catherine was far more fun as a character.

message 22: by Mays (new)

Mays agreed! She was evil but as a character she was much more interesting and well developed. Was almost rooting for her most of the time.

John Totally what I told my husband too. I'm now on the Fury. And Gods preserve me I love it more now than when I started a few days ago.

message 25: by Anna (new)

Anna I watched the show first and couldn’t even get into the book because so much is different

Ishika Exactly my thoughts!!!

I had the same feeling while reading the book, the series is like a very loose interpretation of the book

Siddhi This book is one of the best book ever!!

Elise Why did you rate it one star if you enjoyed it?

message 31: by Keisha (new) - added it

Keisha Why give it one star if you loved it… the show is my current enjoyment, so now I need to read the books. Don’t feel guilty. As you’ve said, it’s fun escapism.

I recently rewatched the show on Prime, love s1-4, particularly s3 is simply awesome, but after that it goes downhill. I guess the 1 star is because I don't think is a good book per se but still I enjoyed it, I guess it's a good bad book lol

thedraconianarcher Fr. Read it when I was 17. It wàs insanely BAD
