did not like it

Am I reading the same book??? I'm wondering if the publisher sent out lots of free copies (which appears to be the case in reviews on goodreads & Amazon so obviously they can't be trusted!!) this book is so flat it's unbelievable! The chapters with the police are two dimensional & pointless. I'm sticking with it but even on page 100 & something I'm thinking , who cares ! The best thing in the story is the dog. Over hyped over marketed - shame on you Ruthless publishers for pushing such a FLAT story when there are some real fantastic page turners out there with not even half the exposure. I.e. Disclaimer by Renee Knight a truly amazing, addictive & brilliant debut . And the wonderful The kind worth killing by Peter Swanson - why don't more people know about that amazing book, a sort of re writing of strangers on a train. Reviewers who state that this is their psychological thriller of the year are either being paid by the publisher or on some sort of deal for free books or haven't read anything else period ! I'm totally disgusted with all the hype and the high marks on goodreads it should never have an over 4 rating more like 2! Rant over ........finished & still rubbish

Renesansni Saša I will not call it rubbish because it was solidly written but can't see why this is so special either....First 20 chapters nothing is happening, parts with the police are boring and many twists a predicted early in the book :)

Sue Kitt Just goes to show that we all like different books, I absolutely loved this book, and I bought this book, it was not given to me free for a good review.

message 3: by Pat (new) - rated it 2 stars

Pat Unfortunately I too read this book and agree with you - definitely no thriller. Also loved Peter Swanson's The Kind Worth Killing.

Kathy Agree that this book should have warned the reader about the subject matter. It was average and the brutal violence was an unwelcome unknown. I read horror all the time but this subject matter should have been mentioned.

Fictionophile Different strokes for different folks. I LOVED this novel! I read about 2-3 books per week and this is the BEST one I've read in over a year.

Kristen I agree with you 100%. The bit between Ray, Kate, Mags was just pointless and page filler, if you ask me. The story about their son, Tom, left lose ends as well. I gave it a 2 star and felt I was being generous!

Wendy Elmsall I agreed with Fictionophile, whilst on average I only read about one book a month, I h
ave recently read Girl on the Train, Gone Girl and I let you go and have to say I was gripped by them all! I let you go was consumed in just two days! I thought that the characters were very well developed and the twists and plat was disturbing but very well executed.

Sheila Barton Agreed

Marc could not agree more. very boring read.

Bill Kupersmith Much depends on whether the reader sympathises with the main character. If I find her behaviour implausible & stupid, I'll not like the book.

M.K. Pagano Thank you! I'm 50 pages in and really bored, but all the positive reviews are confusing me. I think I just have higher standards? I may read a little further but will likely end up DNFing. The writing is just so bad!

I so agree!

Jennifer Blaske That's exactly how I felt. I finally gave up on it.

Renesansni Saša Criminally overrated book, for me average read.

message 15: by Bob (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bob Cunningham I'm stunned. Descriptively graphic and moving at turns and with a twist that many authors would kill for. Each to their own I suppose.

message 16: by Marcella (new)

Marcella I have felt lately that I can tell whether a book is going to be good within the first two chapters, and after two chapters I could see how flat the writing and characters would be. Canned dialogue right away. I stopped reading. I’m so glad someone else agrees!

Karon Buxton I liked the dog , now re reading my review I feel guilty for being so mean , it’s personal taste isn’t it and it just not for me , a lot of effort goes into writing any book . After lockdown and Covid I’m going to be nice and kind to everyone unless they’re racist a misogynist or homophobic!

Eileen Totally agree with your assessment. And thanks for the recommendations of better-written page-turners. Am about half-way through Disclaimer now...much better on all levels!

Victoria Byres Agreed.

Ivy Lur It was hard to read it. So many filler pages I couldn’t care less about. The story was a good concept but badly delivered, cause I knew what was going on right away

Adam Berzak Uhhhh, what dog?pretty far along and no dog

Rebecca There is no need to be disrespectful. Who gives reviews on other books while trashing another? Did you get paid for that?
