really liked it

i really wish i had read this when it first came out, because i think john greens writing has become stronger over time, so i didnt quite love this as much as his more recent stuff. but its still classic JG - need i say more?

i know JG is one of those polarising authors - you either hate him or you love him with no in between - but i find his characterisation of teens really fascinating. many claim his characters are pretentious. i mean, how many teenagers do you know literally searching for their great perhaps like pudge? probably none. but i think he does a great job at portraying teenagers how they perceive themselves. i definitely thought i was an intellectual and enlightened human at that age as well, so i get it.

overall, not my favourite book by him, but it still has that quintessential john green touch that i adore.

Jenna Hetmansperger I love this review! I completely agree with your remark about how he does a great job at portraying how teenagers see themselves.

Safia (safiabooknerd) John Green isn’t my favorite author, but I think I’ll give this book a shot. Awesome review Jessica!

jessica thanks! have you read either 'the fault in our stars' or 'turtles all the way down'? while 'looking for alaska' is good, i think those two are his best books.

Tawneylee Wonderful review! I agree it just has that John green touch that makes it special. 💕

jessica aw. thank you!! so happy to hear that you enjoy that john green touch, as well! :)

Safia (safiabooknerd) I haven’t read those two books yet but I plan on doing so. I have read Paper Towns and briefly An Abundance of Katharines and I didn’t like them at all. I don’t want to give up on John Green yet as he is a very popular author so I’m trying to give him a chance lol.

jessica yeah, i thought those two were okay. not great, just okay. i would suggest TFIOS or TALD - they are better stories, in my opinion.

Kim M "how many teenagers do you know literally searching for their great perhaps like pudge? probably none" LOL right?

But I never thought of it the way you put it - that he's great a portraying teenagers how they perceive themselves - that's a good point!

jessica yeah, its definitely something ive thought about a lot.

like augustus in TFIOS when he put the cigarette in his mouth but didnt light it because it gave him "power" over the thing that could kill him. i mean, please. c'mon. major eye roll. lol.

but i think this pseudo-intellectualism is how teenagers see themselves and i think thats what john green is trying to portray when he characterises his teens.
