Jonathan O'Neill Didn't pick you as a Sci-Fi gal, Julie! You're full of surprises! Granted, you added this in 2011 😄 I really liked this one too. Seeing it in your favourites has reminded me I was meaning to pick up the second book very shortly! :)

Julie G Hi Jonathan,
I have always been more of a "fantasy" reader than sci-fi, but Dune is one of my all-time favorites. I ended up liking his son's books (the Legends of Dune series) almost as much as his original series. Have you read any of them yet?

H (trying to keep up with GR friends) Balikov Agree with that Julie. There was a lot that the younger Herbert brought to the saga

Yes, well I suppose Dune is more Fantasy than Sci-Fi in many ways. A kind of soft sci-fi or even speculative fiction. Anyway, genre's neither here nor there, it's a great story whichever way you look at it :)

I haven't read any of Mini Herbert's books and I hadn't intended to until just now, seeing it backed by both yourself and H. In any case, I've still got a long way to go with the main series, having only finished the first, so I'll see when the time comes whether I feel like continuing. I'll probably only finish books 2 and 3 this year.

Julie G I agree, H. I assumed they were going to be a bust, and I ended up reading all of them.

Julie G Jonathan,
I do think of Dune as science fiction, but, of course, you could argue that it is both sci fi and fantasy.

I only made it to book three of the original series, and then I found it so complex, I lost the pleasure of reading it. "Mini Herbert" was a genius, in my opinion, of making the story more relatable and less technical. Perhaps he sometimes struggled to understand his father as well?
