What do I do with around 10 unfinished UF series? Do I read more from them. No, I start new ones, this included. I’ve bought Written in Red a few years ago, back when I discovered that I like this genre. Slowly, the passion faded away and I was only reading a few volumes each year, which left my kindle full of unread books. Now, since I rekindled my interes in the genre, I decided to go back to my back catalogue.

Written in Red is present in almost all lists of Best Urban Fantasy series. To be honest, I was expecting more of the same thing, vampires, shifters, some action, good old comfort food. Well, I was surprised to learn that this series is a bit different, although it has all the above mentioned elements. It is darker, the supernatural are not friendly, and the shifters actually eat people. The main character cuts herself in order to see the future. As I said, quite dark.

So, Meg is a blood prophet who is kept in a compound by some bad people. She manages to escape and tries to hide at the Lakeside Courtyard, a residential/business district operated by The Others. The Others (shifters) together with vampires, elementals and other strange creatures, are terra indigene. People and terra indigene were separated in the beginning but, as humans evolved, they expanded and clashed with the other species. The indigene are a lot more powerful than people but less adapted to technology. After some fighting, they agree on a pact and divide the world. Some part are only for humans while other parts only for Terra Indigene. However, in the human areas there are a few districts where the other species lives. This is the place where Meg is given a job as Liaison between humans and the Others. She helps with deliveries, mail and other day to day activities that needs human interaction. Meg has been sheltered in that compound all her life so she is very innocent and lacks experience with the outside world. Her kind and curios nature help her to slowly make friends with the reluctant beings, but her safety and happiness are threatened by her past.

I enjoyed this novel a lot, it is very gripping, has interesting characters and plot. I am looking forward to continuing with the series, although, meanwhile, I will probably start a few more series.
In case you were wondering there is no romance in this book although it will come later, I am sure of it.

Donne Great review, Adina! I loved this series too and was bummed when it ended, but Meg and Simon finally get together at the end of the last book. Sorry for the spoiler but I certainly wished I'd known that from the get-go. I don't mind not being able to witness how they navigate their relationship either. I have moved onto the World of the Others. I love these too and they are still dark with little to no focus on romance.

John Gilbert Of course you start a new series Adina, you'll get back to the others eventually. 😉
