Fun! This book really grew on me. It took several tries to get past the first couple of chapters, but once Sophie finally gets settled in at Hex Hall things start moving along. The witchy battles are pretty cool, there's good build-up of the mystique behind the school and behind Sophie's past and powers, and the author does a nice job with creating a variety of different characters with distinctive voices. I especially liked BFF Jenna and the super cute and witty Archer, and Sophie herself turns out to be a pretty kick-ass heroine.
It did take me a little while to get used to the author's voice, but the humor actually gets to be really good as the story develops and I've gone back to giggle over certain passages again. Overally, this is a really terrific debut and a fast-paced, entertaining read. It's always a plus when a YA author manages to surprise her audience with twists and turns in the plot too, and there are a couple of really good ones here that will leave readers on the edge for more.
Besides...you can't not love a girl who tries to stop an attacking werewolf by yelling, "BAD DOG!"

Quotes Wendy Darling Liked
“I heard the man and woman cry a warning as I frantically racked my brain for some sort of throat-repairing spell, which I was clearly about to need. Of course the only words that I actually managed to yell at the werewolf as he ran at me were, 'BAD DOG!'
Then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a flash of blue light on my left. Suddenly, the werewolf seemed to smack into an invisible wall just inches in front of me....
"You know," someone said off to my left, "I usually find a blocking spell to be a lot more effective than yelling 'Bad dog,' but maybe that's just me.”

“Let's just say you may regret that second piece of cake.'
Oh my God. Regret cake? Whatever was about to happen must be truly evil.”

I really liked the author's voice. I loved that she was clueless of her situation for the most part. It kind of reminded me a little of Harry Potter, but I haven't seen too much mention of that in the reviews.

I liked her voice too. Sophie's smart and sarcastic without going overboard on the teen snarkiness. I think my initial reluctance was because I wasn't really pulled in by the prologue, which I think would've been better as a short anecdote later on, but that's just me. Once we got to her trying to stop a werewolf by yelling "Bad dog!" though, I knew it was going somewhere good!
I'll persevere then...I had high hopes for this book as it's got alot of rave and ofcourse the ratings here on GR but I'm just nearly half way and she just found out about her Father, so I'm hoping it starts getting better from here on end as I've got Hex Hall 2 awaiting next to it LOL
I agree, the voice took some getting used to. Makes me think Hawkins wasn't quite used to Dophie's voice yet either.
I loved this book im looking for another like it witty banter not overly angsty like city of bones with a super bad boy like Jace I want another hot archer or Dimitri from VA sometimes good guys are sexier than badbadbad guys right girls? So does anyone know another book like this?
Thanks for the really helpful review. I was wondering how is the romance in the book? is the love interest compelling and charming? is it one of those instant love books? Does the book revolve around love or is that not the main focus?
I really love this book and back when I read it first it said there wasn't a second or third.that was like, last year.I got super madish bc I've been waiting forever to read some more of this. Today I just finished another series and went to look for a new one and found this!!!Urgh can't wait to read the rest now
