Depressing, but necessary to consider and talk about. What's the one unfortunate thing everyone on this planet has in common right now? We will all eventually die one day. So knowing that eventuality, why do we not plan for and discuss how we want to spend our final years/months/weeks/days? If we are fortunate enough to go the way of a steady decline via old age, how can we maintain our enjoyment of life as we become less able to meet our own needs independently without burdening our loved ones? If faced with a terminal prognosis, how do you weigh interventions that can possibly extend quantity of life versus those that can extend quality of life? These questions and more are covered in this book, with sobering real life examples, some of which come from the author's own family. I found this book to be informative and hopefully useful at some point in the very distant future. A must read for everyone, though perhaps delay doing so if there has been a recent death in your life, as this would probably be harder to read emotionally.

Linda Great review, Holly. Good advice on the timing of reading it.

JanB Well-said Holly. It's certainly not a pleasant topic but a necessary one. Weighty questions that sometimes don't have easy answers.

Yun Reaching end of life and figuring out all the logistics of it, along with how to get the most out of those waning years, are such important topics, yet I don't see a lot of literature on it. Thanks for bring this one to my attention, Holly! I added it to my TBR. :)

Yes. It made me really think about discussions I need to have with my own parents along with how I might want to plan for my own future.

It's definitely worth reading! But I will say it's not exactly the most uplifting topic.

I agree, I haven't really seen anything on this topic before either. This was very accessible, laid out in an interesting way, and is very relatable and not preachy. I think this is something everyone needs to force themselves to take the time to reflect on it and plan.

I work for the health insurance side, helping employers offer/administer benefits of their employees so while that is a bit removed from the actual healthcare services itself it did make me think about how the governmental side of health insurance/medicare/medicaid could be improved upon for quality of life services.

You should totally read Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup then - an important topic for vampires. Haha!
