One of the great tear-jerkers of my long-lost childhood, the unlikely friendship between a spider and a pig makes for wonderful reading and a shared moment of love when reading it to kids. It is tender and teaches the values of constancy and integrity in a light, beautiful prose. A classic and a masterpiece.

I am embarrassed to admit I didn't read this book until I was an adult and doing research for my own novel--for which I borrowed liberally from E.B. White. Even named a character Templeton, after the rat. I'm in absolute awe of E. B. White. Better late than never.

My favorite book as a young child. I remember actually crying at the end when I was in 1st or 2nd grade.
I, too, read this book as an adult while taking a children's writing course. I bawled my eyes out reading it on public transit. Did I care, not one bit. Powerful and sweet. Always worth a re-read.
One of my most favorite books of all time. I just purchased the E.B. White-as-narrator audiobook. I have a feeling the tears will just keep on coming.
Thanks Dash fan and Vfields. That is a beautiful description. I had that feeling when I saw Guernica for the first time in Madrid.

Michael - this was also one of my childhood favorites (along with J.T.). I recalled crying myself to sleep. lol
Ah - J. T...By Jane Wagner, with photos by Gordon Parks Jr.
Basically, it's about this kid who lives in the ghetto, who finds a homeless cat, and takes care of it. As a cat lover, I cried over this one too.
You're welcome! The cat(s) featured in the book are one of my fave types - black & white 'tuxedos'. :)
One of my favorite books as a child. You might also try The Story of Charlotte's Web: E. B. White's Eccentric Life in Nature and the Birth of an American Classic by Michael Sims.
Charlotte's web is a book of feelings love and caring as in the book it showed us that the spider write these wonderful words about the pig Wilbur but that also shows us that the spider loves Wilbur as her friend and she took grate care of Wilbur like he was her child
