4.5 Aliens are hot stuff stars!
Holy Hawt Chemistry, Batman
Buddy read with Jenny
Okay, I admit I've had this book on my TBR shelf since 2017 and kept pushing this sucker out year after year! I'm an idiot! And I can't help but shake my head at my own self for not picking this up sooner!
“Obsidian” was beyond anything I was expecting!
I loved the story, the characters, the ominous feels this book gave me and by the end, the rabid desire of getting my hands on the next book!
Sci-fi leaning books aren't really my thing but this one was so unexpectedly delightful!
I've read that this story has a lot of “Twilight” vibes to it, but since I've never read “Twilight” or care to, I came into this without prejudice and zero regrets.
I enjoyed the small-town feel where this book is set and it makes perfect sense that if aliens had to choose a place to hide it would totally be West Virginia!
Daemon Black and his siblings left their planet, Lux, (a planet millions of light years away) after its destruction and found refuge and safety on Earth along with many others of their species.

They've managed to keep under the radar, so-to-speak, blending in with the locals and living life as normal as they can. They're also hiding from the Arum, aliens from a sister planet in their galaxy who are basically hunting them down to steal their abilities.
The Luxen keep to their own kind trying their best not to form friendships or romantic attachments to humans because humans are a danger to their survival. Whenever a Luxen uses their powers around a human it leaves a trace which can be tracked by the Arum, hence, having dealings with humans is kept to a bare minimum.
When Katy Swartz moves into the sleepy West Virginia town of Ketternam, next door to Daemon and his sister Dee, she would put everything Daemon had been working towards at protecting his own to the ultimate test, and become a liability that would bring his people closer to danger than ever before.
To Daemon, my arrival was the beginning of the end. The apocalypse. Kat-mageddon.
Katy is sassy and although she suffers from bouts of self-doubt, she isn't a weakling. I loved her! She is instantly attracted to Daemon when they first meet but doesn't allow his cold-shouldered, rude attitude to intimidate her.
He was probably the hottest guy I'd ever seen in real life, and he was a total douche.
Katy sheds her introverted nerd-ness and shines in so many moments, revealing her own strength to herself and courage she never thought she possessed, proving to be a total fighter and true friend to Dee.
Of course, the meat of this book is the sloooooow-burn romance between Daemon and Katy that had me on the edge of a precipice from beginning to end!
YES! Daemon is a TOTAL a-hole! He was condescending, arrogant, rude, pushy, sometimes just plain brutal and mean.
He was the kind of boy that broke hearts and left a long line of them shattered behind him. He was trouble. Maybe the fun kind of trouble, but he was also a jerk. And I didn't do jerks. Not that I did anyone.
And I LOVED HIM!!!
I guess I am immune to this sort of alpha because having read so many in contemporary romances and since I've also been forever ruined by one Baron “Vicious” Spencer, who I believe will forever reign as THE top alpha a-hole in my book, I KNOW I am in for a criminally-angsty-salivating good time!

As Daemon becomes more intrigued with Katy, his walls of resistance begin to shake and slowly, brick-by-brick, what used to be an impregnable wall starts to crack.
Daemon and Katy share some truly incredible, vulnerable, sweet moments together that had my heart doing that little happy dance…
“I've always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect.” ~ Daemon
And some pretty scorching ones too that left me wanting MORE!
The images were back. The two of us. Hot and sweaty. I bit my lip and tried to make my expression blank, but yet again I knew he could tell what I was thinking when his expression turned annoyingly smug. Beyond annoying.
“You're kind of dirty, Kitten.”
By the end of this book I did NOT get what I wanted so I have to get the next one… PRONTO!
There were some creepy, tense along some action packed scenes in this which made the story interesting and fun.
The only reason this didn't get a full five stars is that I wished the author would've explained more about the Luxen's abilities and the physics behind how their energy can be used or is affected. That might get a bit technical for a YA book but it would've added a richer depth to the sci-fi element of the story.
The secondary characters were fun and added substance to the story. I'm sure we'll get much more from Ash and the Thompson twins (not the musical group). And of course, I'm looking forward to more of Dee Black who was such an enjoyable, fun character! Can't wait to see how her story arc will be further developed.
Overall, I LOVED this! And I'm so glad I FINALLY picked it up!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

April wrote: "How “young adult” is it?"I would say for anyone 16 and older IMO. It does contain its share of cuss words and no graphic sex but close enough. However, the next book, “Oblivion” I would definitely categorize more as NA. Lots more swear words.
Shay wrote: "I love his nickname, kitten!"I didn't at first. I found it condescending but as I got to know Daemon's character and Kat's disposition it fit perfectly and it grew on me as the story went along. Then it became endearing 😊
Have you listened to this on audiobook, Shay?

I thought it made him seem like a jerk at first, but it grew on me.
I haven't! I'm going to now😉I'm also not a huge fan of audiobooks. I only listen if they're recommended.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how things unravel!
