I have mixed feelings on this book. The writing, suspense, and characters were good, but I am not thrilled about where the plot went. Honestly, I wish this book would have stuck to being an intense drama, and left out the plot twists. It was so close to being a good book for me, and now I just feel disenchanted because of the last bit of the book. This book had an opportunity to present a decent message, and completely failed. I just think that right now is not the time to say what The Wife says. I am also not saying what I feel outright so that I don't totally spoil the book for you.
That being said, everything leading up to it was amazing. The story is an addicting one, and it's something I would follow in real life. It was relevant (for the most part). I loved most of the book, but I'm still so frustrated by what happened.

This is exactly how I felt! I was pretty sure it might be a 5 star read through most of it, but by the end I felt so unsatisfied by the turn it had taken that I settled on 3.5 stars.

So glad I'm not alone because everyone else seems to have loved it haha.

I am enraged right now."It doesn't go away...it's been almost two months, and I'm still so frustrated by this book because it keeps coming up since everyone loves it. Now it's being made into a movie, and some articles are relating it to #metoo. Nope. It's just giving more reasons for people not to believe women.
I stayed up all night reading, and when I finished at around 5 a.m., I wanted to go pitch the book off the fire escape of the building I live in. However, it was a library book, so I'll just return it. It was like eating a big meal that was good, but at the end, the heartburn made it so not worth it!
I rated the book three stars and I normally love this author. I thought that a redeeming feature was the article “Sometimes women don’t know if they have been raped,” which was plausible in this case for Angela. Other things bothered me besides the ending. I felt detached from the characters, except Angela’s mother and son, and Rachel, the female intern. Susanne and Colin seemed real. I certainly never felt empathy for Jason, but Rachel was such a closed book that it was hard to develop a relationship with her. We learned why later but that didn’t make me feel closer to her. So, I never became invested in the story the way I kept expecting to be. The ending therefore left me numb rather than angry.
I agree. The story fell flat and I was left disappointed. I'm so surprised about the high 5 star reviews...?
It gets caught up in its own cleverness when it didn’t require that much posturing. The moment the book reveals that Franklin’s other victim was unidentified, there’s a lot you can suss out fairly quickly about Angela and what happened in that house that really didn’t need to be twisted into something more. A survivor’s narrative is a great thread for a dark story, but the author pushed it beyond what I felt was believable.
