The author of this book stated that it was a "labor of love" inspired by his reading of Erich Maria Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front." That novel is the quintessential depiction of World War I from the standpoint of the men who fought it.
Meyer's book, in my opinion, is the quintessential history of The Great War aimed at the general reader. You finish this book feeling you've learned everything anyone needs to know about the cataclysm that was World War I.
Very highly recommended.

Jay, now you have to read Meyer’s follow-up book to this one, The World Remade. I couldn’t imagine what could be left for Meyer to cover in a second book but boy was I wrong. The second book illustrates how the U.S. got involved in WWI and the story is not pretty. President Wilson might remind you as he did me of a recent former president except that Wilson was more intelligent and, therefore, accomplished. The second book is a must read.

I also was engrossed by this book, Jay and glad you enjoyed it. I agree with David's recommendation for The World Remade.
Christine wrote: "I want to read this! On my list now."Good choice. Follow up with Meyer's other book, A World Remade.
Let me also endorse David and Jill's recommendation of The World Remade. These are tow great histories of WWI.
