ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS !
In the start, I thought this book would be from the view point of animals; about how they are treated, how they expect to be treated and how man is cruel towards them.
But but but;
I am amazed at how Orwell criticizes the political maneuvers and totalitarian rule, using animals to explain what humans do. The author beautifully portrays the way a revolution is started to stop what is happening and going full circle comes to the same point it started from. Just the face of power is changed.
This book tells how the ruling class makes fool of the working class, uses their energies and resources for their own pleasure. What happens behind the closed doors of power.
How the working class is being brain washed that they are happy and satisfied and free despite of the obvious slavery they have been undergoing.
My favorite character was Benjamin (yes, a donkey) , who remains a neutral throughout and says nothing despite understanding everything.
A huge applause to Orwell for being able to explain human psyche, political and social dilemma wrapped in the form of this story.

I once picked it up as a kid, didn't get most of it, then my mom took the book away and told me later, now I've wanted to read it again properly for a CENTURY!! Loved the review!!!
You should read it Mary. It's a good one. Moreover, now you will be able to understand it much better :)
Hey Sid,Did you ever read Watership Down? Way less brutal, but still the appeal of the talking animals!
No Julie, I haven't but I would definitely add it to my *to-read* list if you think it's a good one :)
Great review!!! I have to read this now! I feel Jack London does this too and find him fantastic for it..
I believe that the CIA thought it had such great potential for an anti-communist message, that they collaborated (funded, produced?) with Disney to create the (animated?) film. That's what someone told me.

I am sure gonna check on this :)
Nice review, Sid. I guess Animal Farm could be said to be an essential social and political treatise for any society.

And yes it could!
Great review, Sid. This was required reading as a sophomore in high school about a hundred years ago & really didn't care for it. I guess I should read again. I suspect my response would be much improved.

You definitely should give it a read!
Hello Ana! I do agree with you on how amazing George Orwell did in illustrating the totalitarian society through animals. Orwell really put into perspective the different kinds of people in society and transformed them into different kinds of animals. For instance I think the dogs really represent the loyal workers to the ruler of society with undeniable devotion to whatever their superior says. I also think Squealer represents the propaganda that spreads false information around and makes sure people listen and believe it while animals like Boxer illustrate all of the laborers and workers that while they don't appreciate the conditions they are in they don't really know any better. Which becomes really unfortunate but at the same time gives a big reality check that these kinds of things did happen historically such as the Russian revolution. The quote that you inputted in the beginning that “all animals are equal but some are more equal than others” really surprised me because I understand that and know that it is really absurd to say that. I also feel that it is a form of satire and just plain out ridiculous. But this book overall really did capture the larger point about being a totalitarian society.
I’m planning to read it! After I’ve read 1984, I for sure want to read more of his books. Animal farm has been on my list for a whileeee. (the excitement of finding yourself a next read after you’ve finished reading a book, or have been in a reading slump…. Like me… is so nice! Lol)
I'm amazed that there are people who know nothing about 'Animal Farm!!! When I was in my teens (early 1960s) EVERYONE knew about it and most people had read it at school and discussed it! It's a brilliant book.
