it was ok
bookshelves: digital-library-books, historical-fiction

Another historical fiction novel about WWII. I’m sorry, but this was a struggle from about 20% in until the end. The author seemed to lose touch with her characters and only slightly used them to give a TON of facts about the war in Berlin. So glad I finished but really wish I had never bothered to read it.
One additional note. I did marvel over the similarities in what Hitler said/did in his rise to power and what Trump says and does. It’s frightening, almost as if they were following the same handbook. Somewhere it said that Hitler and the Nazis kept repeating the same lies over and over, so much that even the people who had been there and had seen with their own eyes that this was a lie began to doubt themselves. Also, the free press is the enemy of fascism. Sounds so familiar...

Nancy Thanks for the warning! I'll remove it from my Overdrive wishlist!

Barbara Nutting Hitler and Trump - two peas in a rotten pod - see my review!

Jennifer I think that the author put her political feelings first at the expense of the story. Has Trump killed millions? No. It’s an insult to the Jewish families who suffered so much at the hands of Hitler. Also, doesn’t he have a Jewish son-in-law? Let’s keep the truth of the Holocaust sacrosanct.

Cathy Jennifer, the author never mentioned Trump. Did you read it? I am the one that saw the obvious similarities between Hitler and Trump. Sounds like you should read it and see for yourself. As for insulting the Jews that survived the Nazi annihilation, many of them are the ones who have also pointed the similarities out.

Nancy I’ve read the review again. Cathy did not discuss the Holocaust nor did she make comparisons to the murder of millions or targeting Jews. She pointed out the similarities in messaging used by both Hitler and Trump. The Holocaust is our darkest moment in history. Knowing humans can be so evil we must all be watchful for signs.
And to answer your question Trump’s daughter is also Jewish.

Sandra Because I'm a Canadian I did see similarities between the rise of Histler and Trump but I dont think that was the reason for this novel, I learned much about the hope for help from Russia and not the Western countries.

Donna I have just started this book and am trying to decide whether to continue with it. Sounds like you all see what you want to see. Oh and by the way the left called George W. Bush Hitler as well. Seems like everyone people disagree with are called Hitler.

Nancy Nobody in this thread called Trump anything. They were commenting on his tactics. Btw have you seen the news this week?

Suha Voelker Another biased comparison to Hitler and Trump. I guess he really does live rent -free in your head.

Gina Mendola I have just read about twenty percent of this book. I came to Goodreads to see if others felt what I feel when reading this. And apparently, many do. The author writes so glowingly of the communist it is kind of disgusting and really distracting. I actually think she must be communist and I am not interested in propaganda books. I’ll try a few more pages but from these reviews it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to stomach the whole thing.

Monica Totally agree with your review, Cathy.

Amanda I agree with your review, Cathy. I just came to Goodreads to see if anyone else felt the same way as me. The way Hitler manipulates the public and gives a voice to a radicalist minority until it grows to the majority voice is frightening. Too many highlights in this book sound like statements we’d say nowadays.
