I expected this to be bizarre. I was not disappointed!

In the past I have not had much luck with Cyberpunk. While I did enjoy this one more than my previous experiences, I still don’t think it will be a genre that I will generally go out of my way to read. It is just a little but too out there, to the point of being a chore to push through, from time to time.

This book goes from cinematic action to humor to religious philosophy to computer hacking to mafia violence with great abandon. In discussing this with my book club we had to clarify timelines and how one chapter might relate to another because of the fuzzy jumps in the plot. But, then I would find giant sections of great and extremely interesting clarity. It really did keep me on my toes!

I am not sure who I might recommend this to because I don’t think I know anyone that I would point at and say “yeah, this book is so you!” But, it is considered a modern classic, so it may come up in book discussions and it might be worth having it as a point of reference between you and your book buddies. But, be warned, I feel like the majority might find it to be a bit of a chore and lose interest quickly.

Eileen Right? That's hilarious! We appear to be at around the same place!

You beat me, but I am finally done!

Eileen Good job! Your review mirrors exactly my thoughts on the book. I'm glad I read it and it was definitely one of the better cyberpunk books I've read, but it's not a natural genre for me. There were …. 3 cyberpunk short stories in the The Mythic Dream collection and I think I couldn't wrap my head around one of them, I thought the second one was pretty good, and I really liked the 3rd one. That seems to be normal for this genre for me.

Saul Escalona Great review Mattew, I get your point... but.. as per GR this book is considered in the top 50 of Popular Cyberpunk Books together with ready player one, neuromancer , do android dream of... etcetera So probably we could recommend this book to cyberpunk science fiction fans. Cheers

Oh, Ready Player One was one of the Cyberpunk books I really enjoyed!

It sounded like we were headed in the same direction with this one!

Stephen Ground breaking when originally published. I was pretty wowed. Then Stephenson got extremely long winded and forgot how to write a descent ending. Never found another of his books that wowed.

It's interesting, you know . . . until I saw these comments I never thought of Ready Player One as Cyberpunk . . . but, yeah, it is! I loved it and always just thought of it a pop culture geeky-ness. I guess it made too much sense to me to think of it as Cyberpunk! :D

I have a few others of his that I want to read. I have had a copy of Cryptonomicon and I hope it is a good one!

I'll even up it a little: The book, the review and the reviewer!

LOL!

Liane Cyberpunk. Huh. I had no idea this was a genre, but It makes sense. And, I guess I am that person that likes this genre. Good review, as usual.

Thanks, Liane! It is a pretty crazy and out there genre. I have had both good and bad experiences with it.

David Great review! I reread this book every couple of years or so, and I still get a kick out of it. Dog lovers might dig this book.

Amy Exactly. When a highly-rated book is not in a favorite genre and I don’t enjoy it, but does have redeeming qualities… where there are wonderful patches of humor, or insight, and I want to recognize the author’s achievement and not chase off readers who might be more appreciative, but I just don’t know anybody personally to whom I could honestly say, “This is so you!”
