With her latest book, I am reminded once again why Isabel Allende is one of my favourite authors. She tells a political story of love, hope and compassion. She paints beautiful portrayals of each character so that her readers can relate to and empathize with them and their imperfect humanities. Allende brings to light historical events I was totally ignorant about until now. Her extensive research of Spain's Civil War beginning in 1938, the Spanish refugees who escaped to France and then sailed on the SS Winnipeg to Chile in 1939, to Chile's political history up to 1991 was so enlightening that I had to Google these events to learn more. I found this story to be suitably paced with a satisfying ending. A MUST READ for all historical fiction fans!

And with your review, you reminded me why I used to love her books too, Debbie. It's been years since I've read her but I also appreciated what I learned from her books and what I was inspired to learn more about, from reading them. Excellent review!

I came across Allende while vacationing in Costa Rica several years ago. I needed a book to read, and luckily, the resort's gift shop sold books, including her DAUGHTER OF FORTUNE. Since reading that book, I was hooked!
Excellent review. This is be a fun book for our book group, so I think I will see if the library has copies for us thank you

Glad to know Debbie that this is an author that brings vividly historical events. I've read only one book by her and it was such a slow burn, but I have this book on my TBR.

Annette wrote: "Daughter of Fortune"That was the first Allende book I read! My all-time favorite was Inés of My Soul! A fantastic historical look into Chile!
I literally just saw this book for the first time in my local library a few days ago, and thought it sounded cool. You can bet I'll be stopping in there again soon and picking this one up! I'll have to check if they have any of her others book too.

I really do hope they have more of her books as I've liked all the ones I've read so far by her. My favorite is Inés of My Soul!

Thanks Debbie, I added this one to my list :)

Fantastic review Debbie. I have yet to read a book by this highly lauded author - I need to correct this!
I've been meaning to read Allende ever since I heard ravings about her House of The Spirits, this one is on my list as well, though I can't decide with which one to begin. Amazing review, Debbie!

Amazing review, Debbie!"I do own, but haven't read, her book The House of the Spirits which many readers claim is their favorite by Allende. Since you enjoy magic realism, Tamoghna, I suggest that you start with this one!
Glad you loved this too, Debbie. Allende is awesome and I love stories that take you to South America!
