i first read this when i was like 10 or 11 and i remember really liking it. i recently came across an online thread about this book/series and the message(s) the author was intending to convey, and i was taken aback. i honestly really didnt remember anything except for talking bears that wear armour. lol.
after the reread, i am suprised that i read this as a child. this is definitely a ‘childrens book’ that is not meant for children, in my opinion. the deeper meanings are pretty subtle but, regardless, i have no idea how i was able to read and enjoy this because i highly doubt i really understood what was going on half the time. so it was an interesting experience to read this with an adult perspective. i still enjoyed it, but it was a completely different reading experience than when i was a kid, understandably.

i totally get that. i think time and age definitely makes for different reading experiences. im sure there are books that i read years ago and didnt like, but might like them now, and vice versa. so youre not alone!
I was a bit like that as well! It was one of my favourite books as a kid but after learning a bit about its background later on and then rereading it as an adult, I was blown away how freaking dark and layered the story is and how I still loved it as a kid, while also missed so many metaphors and double meanings. Still love it though, I honestly think it's brilliant!
anita - hey! i reworded it, because article is the wrong word to use. i came across an online post where people discussed the various themes in the book and the authors intention, and i was surprised at how dark and heavy they were. as a kid, it went completely over my head. heres the thread -https://old.reddit.com/r/books/commen...em - right?! the whole separating the kids from their daemons was so cruel. there really was no way i could understand how vicious that is, as a kid. there is just so much going on with this story, im excited to see how it progresses as a series.
@jessica It literally broke my heart- the kids being separated from their daemons. Killed me. I read these when I was 18 in like March 2008 (I know because my husband- then bf- lent me them and said I HAD to read, bc they were incredible. And I think in between work, days off from school, and when my hubs was at work I still devoured all 3 in a week. I’d sometimes get home @ 3 AM and read all night exhausted at school haha. Have you read all 3 before? It truly strengthens your love for the whole series.
I remember trying to read this when I was younger and I got so bored that I just never finished. I’m sure it’s much more interesting from an adult’s perspective! Do you plan on watching the new BBC tv show that’s coming out later this year? I remember the old movie version was awful lol
ashley - ahhhh! dont you just love that? those are the best reading experiences and im so happy that you had it with this book/series! i havent read the other books, only this one. so im excited to continue the series!sailor - hmmm. not sure. i think i might wait to see what people think, if its any good or not. fingers crossed its not as terrible as the movie. lol.
Love this series... I binged/reread all of these books & the prequel and short stories earlier this year!
