Chosen for my IRL book club and not my preferred genre, but I'm so glad I read this.
Min Jin Lee's masterpiece is a journey through generations, cultures, and emotions. Be prepared for an eye-opening, heart-wrenching journey deep into the hearts and minds of four generations of a Korean family living in Japan, dealing with discrimination and hardship as well as themes of identity, belonging, and survival.

Christy wrote: "I’ve read so many wonderful reviews on this one. Glad you enjoyed it too."Thanks so much Christy, it is not my usual preferred genre but I really enjoyed it, despite that. 🥰
This one sounds poignant and heartfelt. So glad you managed to enjoy it. I recently read a short story by this author, "The Best Girls." If I remember correctly, you too read it and wrote a review. :)Excellent review, Esta!
I'm always debating whether to join a book club or not, mostly because of having to read genres that aren't my cup of tea. But hey, I might be lucky and find some good books that I wouldn't have read otherwise. Just like it happened to you. It sounds like a really great book!
Wonderful review, Esta! I'm so happy you are glad to have steppedoutside your usual genre and read this book! It sounds like such a powerful book and I keep meaning to read it!
Fabulous and intriguing review, Esta! I’m glad that walking outside the familiar territories has left you with a profound reading experience, my friend. This sounds effective and moving, too. 🖤🖤
I’ve heard so many good things about this book! It seems this is another one I’ll have to read and judge for myself. Brilliant review as always babe 😘

I preferred the Best Girls to Pachinko, which is wild considering the different lengths of both. 🤍 Thank you so much!

I have skipped a few months of the chosen books. Glad I made an effort for this one though! 🥰 Thanks, Isabel 🤍

This sounds effective and moving, too. 🖤🖤"Thank you so much Debbie my lovely friend! Since then, my quota has been fulfilled at least for a good while, for poignant generational family sagas. Glad it was worthwhile! 🤍🤍
I too was really surprised how drawn in I was to this story… a book out of my comfort zone but it stayed with me a long time. Wonderful review!!
This one's definitely out of my comfort zone too! I'm definitely curious about it though (I know both Korean and Japanese culture are pretty intense). I'm glad you ended up enjoying it! 💕
I would like to read this and then watch the film. Thank you Esta for your review of a family journey
Sara wrote: "I’ve heard so many good things about this book! It seems this is another one I’ll have to read and judge for myself. Brilliant review as always babe 😘"Thanks so much, Sara! It's a meandering pace, which as a faster-paced/adrenaline junkie I had to adjust to, but once I got used to it, it was really poignant/beautiful. Hope you enjoy it if you get to it, my lovely! 🤍💗
Lilyya wrote: "ah glad to hear that you enjoyed it ! even tho it’s not your favorite genre <3"Thanks so much, gorgeous! A successful experiment but I'm probs still going to stick to my comfort zone, despite the success, haha 🤍
Heidi wrote: "I too was really surprised how drawn in I was to this story… a book out of my comfort zone but it stayed with me a long time. Wonderful review!!"Thank you so much Heidi and right back at you! I'm so happy you enjoyed it too, despite being out of your comfort zone. 🥰

I'm glad you ended up enjoying it! 💕"Thanks so much, Aimee! Oh yeah for sure, it's a historical family drama, set post-war, which I generally avoid because I don't like hearing about sad historical events (fantasy/horror/sci-fi/thriller is my jam), no one was more surprised than me that it worked for me. A good one to try if you're in the mood for experimenting. 🤍💙
Murray wrote: "I would like to read this and then watch the film. Thank you Esta for your review of a family journey"Thanks so much Murray! I've heard from fellow Pachinko appreciators that the series is brilliant and does justice to the book. I'd love to know what you think about both! I just watched the trailer and felt very moved.
Thoughtful review. It always surprises me when I read something outside my preferred niche and really like it. Glad you experienced a similar response.
Adding this to my TBR! I love it when books outside of our usual genres surprise us. It’s such a good feeling 🥹 the cover is so pretty too??? So happy you enjoyed this my precious sunshine 💗☀️✨
Nice crisp review, Esta! This is a great book for a discussion; it has so many points to focus on. I too had read it for my book club, though it is among my favourite genres anyway. :D ❤️
Glad it was such a great book club read. The Korean society can definitely be an interesting topic for discussion. Good review, Esta.

Thibault wrote: "Glad it was such a great book club read. The Korean society can definitely be an interesting topic for discussion. Good review, Esta."Definitely Thibault! Really interesting. Parts of the story were inspired by real people/subjects that Min Jin Lee interviewed, which provoked a lot of discussion for book club too. ❤️🩹

Rowan wrote: "Great review, Esta! Love it when book clubs or friends get us reading outside our comfort zone - and it pays off!"In this case, it worked so well! I have been led astray for books that don't work at all for me though. At least it was a learning experience I guess? Now I'm more discerning about what months and books I "opt-in" for. 😜 Thanks a bunch Rowan!
Coco (Semi-Hiatus) wrote: "I've seen so many raving reviews for this and heard great things about the show. I can't wait to read this. Wonderful review, Esta!"The show looks so good. And has such high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes too. Let me know what you think if you read/watch either Coco! And thank you so much! 🤍💙
