Chosen for my IRL book club and not my preferred genre, but I'm so glad I read this.

Min Jin Lee's masterpiece is a journey through generations, cultures, and emotions. Be prepared for an eye-opening, heart-wrenching journey deep into the hearts and minds of four generations of a Korean family living in Japan, dealing with discrimination and hardship as well as themes of identity, belonging, and survival.

Nika This one sounds poignant and heartfelt. So glad you managed to enjoy it. I recently read a short story by this author, "The Best Girls." If I remember correctly, you too read it and wrote a review. :)
Excellent review, Esta!

Isabel ♡ I'm always debating whether to join a book club or not, mostly because of having to read genres that aren't my cup of tea. But hey, I might be lucky and find some good books that I wouldn't have read otherwise. Just like it happened to you. It sounds like a really great book!

I just saw your review for The Best Girls & so glad it moved you too Nika. I preferred the Best Girls to Pachinko, which is wild considering the different lengths of both. 🤍 Thank you so much!

Joining a real flexible, anything-goes, chilled book club is the go, because then you can skip books if you're really not resonating with the genre or mood and no one gets offended. I have skipped a few months of the chosen books. Glad I made an effort for this one though! 🥰 Thanks, Isabel 🤍

Thank you so much Debbie my lovely friend! Since then, my quota has been fulfilled at least for a good while, for poignant generational family sagas. Glad it was worthwhile! 🤍🤍

Heidi (can’t retire soon enough) I too was really surprised how drawn in I was to this story… a book out of my comfort zone but it stayed with me a long time. Wonderful review!!

aimee (aimeecanread) This one's definitely out of my comfort zone too! I'm definitely curious about it though (I know both Korean and Japanese culture are pretty intense). I'm glad you ended up enjoying it! 💕

Thanks so much, Sara! It's a meandering pace, which as a faster-paced/adrenaline junkie I had to adjust to, but once I got used to it, it was really poignant/beautiful. Hope you enjoy it if you get to it, my lovely! 🤍💗

Thanks so much, Aimee! Oh yeah for sure, it's a historical family drama, set post-war, which I generally avoid because I don't like hearing about sad historical events (fantasy/horror/sci-fi/thriller is my jam), no one was more surprised than me that it worked for me. A good one to try if you're in the mood for experimenting. 🤍💙

Thanks so much Murray! I've heard from fellow Pachinko appreciators that the series is brilliant and does justice to the book. I'd love to know what you think about both! I just watched the trailer and felt very moved.

Definitely Thibault! Really interesting. Parts of the story were inspired by real people/subjects that Min Jin Lee interviewed, which provoked a lot of discussion for book club too. ❤️‍🩹

In this case, it worked so well! I have been led astray for books that don't work at all for me though. At least it was a learning experience I guess? Now I'm more discerning about what months and books I "opt-in" for. 😜 Thanks a bunch Rowan!
