Finally! Tom Brandt’s murder is solved, and the reason behind it is ugly.
Before we get there, though, we get a chance to spend more time with Maeve as she takes it upon herself to assist with the cold case investigation, and consequently, we discover just how capable and quick-witted she is.
Frank meanwhile is still talking to possible suspects and dealing with the Pinkerton agents helping him. (Who would have expected Frank to be able to accept help like this when we met him in book one?)
Sarah is kept busy off-page with deliveries, so she’s not present for much of the detecting, which is slow and frequently leads off in non-productive directions.
I’m glad we got to spend so much time with Maeve, and resolve this murder, which we first heard about in book one. Hopefully, Sarah is a full participant in the next instalment, and Maeve gets to work again on an investigation, as I think she’s proven her levelheadedness and intelligence not just as a nursemaid, but as a detective.
