Remember those angry, bitchy girls in high school, who sat around judging people and talking smack behind everyone's back? Okay, now imagine being locked in a box for an hour forced to listen to those jealous twits and you've got Ghost World in a nutshell.

I have been wanting to read Ghost World for ages. I stumbled across a copy of it at the library, so finally picked it up. I think if I had originally read this a decade ago, I might not have disliked the characters so much. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood to be reading this at the present time, but I felt impatient reading the whining of two bitter disenchanted teens.

I almost stopped reading a few pages in because of the incessant complaining. However, I'm glad that I continued reading because the characters become less annoying towards the end. The attempts to be witty failed miserably. Apparently, I'm in the minority here since this is a cult classic with rave reviews. I wouldn't advise reading this on a day you're plagued with ill humor. You'll only want to chuck the book across the room.

Rachael I felt the same way. All the characters do is bitch without insight or wit. I don't see why this is so popular!

MissAnnThrope I was beginning to wonder if something was wrong with me for not liking this much-adored comic. Thank you for letting me know I'm not alone in this. I feel a bit less crazy now.

I wish I had done the same! I had hoped that somehow it would redeem itself by the end, but it just never happened.

Violette Exactly my thoughts!!

John Same here. It's like I'm reading two whining drama queens with no plot whatsoever.

bailey⚡️ I feel the exact same way. No one ever understands when I tell them I do not like Ghost World.

Ashton Francis Agreed. I like other work by Clowes, but the negativity and cynicism on display here didn't seem directed at anything (think 'Art School Confidential'). It was misanthropy for the sake of misanthropy. I'm all for authenticity or whatever, but shit if these characters didn't seem one-dimensional in their disgust for everything around them. Mehhh.

Samantha I had to read this for a class Im taking at my university and I am dreading discussing it because it is bleak and the girls drove me insane. So glad I'm not the only one who wasn't into it.

Samantha Sounds bad. I am now not going to read it.

Lee Osborne My opinion is completely different. I think you either get it or you don't. I think it's one of the most perfectly observed things I've ever read, and it touches me on a very deep emotional level.

Allie It's incredibly mean without any witty snark to back it up. It's like one long bitchfest. Maybe it's a generational thing, I'm not gen X. I did watch Daria though, and that was aces in terms of nailing counterculture outcasts with negative world views.
