Sentence , a word of multiple meanings - the sentence that the main character, an ex con named Tookie serves in jail, the sentences in this book and the so many other books mentioned here, (thankfully Erdrich gave us a list at the end), the sentences the characters sometimes impose on themselves .
The story is haunting, literally because the ghost who comes to the book store where Tookie works, haunting because of things in the past of the characters, the history of indigenous people, haunting in the present of the country with Covid, the killing of George Floyd, with pervasive racism. It’s also a beautiful tribute to books and people who love reading, independent bookstores (not just any bookstore, but Louise Erdrich’s bookstore) https://birchbark books.com/pages/our-story
I thought it was a good way to mark National Native American Heritage Month by reading a book by Louise Erdrich . (https://nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/ ) Actually any time is a good time to read a Louise Erdrich book.
I received a copy of this book from HarperCollins through Edelweiss.

Nice review Angela 🙂. I read one of her books a few years ago. Your review has me thinking I'll read another one.
Sarah, thanks very much. I’ve read several by Erdrich. My favorites are The Night Watchman and LaRose . She’s a fabulous writer and I’m glad I have more of her books to get to.
I'm looking forward to getting to this book down the road. Seeing how much you liked it lets me know I'm in for a good read.
Bianca, Elyse, Karen, Candi and Lisa , thanks so much as always for taking the time to read and comment.
Wowza. This sounds extremely powerful in a myriad of ways Angela! Thanks for putting this on my radar and sharing such a fabulous review.
Susanne, thanks so much! It really w packed a powerful punch . The more I think about it- I’m going to go from 4 to 5 stars !
Already on my list, Angela, but your review is the perfect nudge to read this. I really can't wait. Thanks.
A great review, Angela. I’m excited to read it, particularly after listening to an interview with Erdrich about the book and her bookstore.
Just lovely, Angela. The way you write about books always moves me. Thank you for the care you take!
Kimberlee, thanks so much for your kind words. I’m trying to write shorter reviews and I always hope I can do a book justice.
I just saw this title in my local library as an express read. I will definitely check it out once it becomes available to slow pokes, thanks to your rating and review.
How clever to build a book on the myriad ways in which 'sentence' can be conceived! Great review, Angela.
Lovely review Angela. I'm fairly sure I haven't read this author so it might be a good place to start. Thank you 😊
Sharon , thanks so . It’s definitely a good one. I would also recommend The Night Watchman for which she won a Pulitzer Prize . My favorite by her so far .
Spot-on review, Angela. I'm currently reading this one as Louise Erdrich is one of my favorite authors. :)
Ah awesome review, Angela. I think I'm going to pay the debt on returning this to the library as I'm running out of time and it's a new copy. I so adore Erdrich and glad this one delivered!
It will be worth the debt ! Thanks, Jen. I love her more with every book I read by her . I had originally given this 4 stars , but I thought about what she has accomplished here and moved it up.
May , it’s such a fabulous story based on Erdrich’s grandfather. I hope you love it as much as I did’
Angela I’m glad you were able to enjoy it. For me it was the 3rd book I read set during Covid and I wasn’t ready for it. I always love her writing
Lindsay, thank so much. I recommend Erdrich. I’ve read a few and my favorites are LaRose and The Night Watchman.
