it was amazing

Fantastic. One of the most unusual books I've ever read.

♑︎♑︎♑︎ ♑︎♑︎♑︎ a neglected 20th century masterpiece imo. So unique, and so different from his other novels. The only thing it reminds me of is another neglected 20th century masterpiece, USA Trilogy.

Cheri Love seeing all those stars for this one, it's been on my list to read for too long!

Michael I read this at university back in 1976 and loved it. It triggers me because when I attempted to discuss it with a gaggle of arrogant English majors I was rebuffed as some sort of philistine. I have tried to avoid English majors ever since. 😄

I hadn't heard of the USA trilogy, but will look into it now. But I agree that this is a masterpiece. Have you read Pynchon's 'Mason and Dixon'? Pynchon's flirtation between historical fact and fiction is very similar to Doctorow's. And for a UK equivalent, read Graham Swift's 'Waterland'. Both excellent :D

It's well worth a read, Cheri. I wasn't sure it was going to appeal to me at all before I picked it up, but was very pleasantly surprised!

A philistine? What a ridiculous accusation! Surely your reading and enjoyment of this unconventional novel suggests you're the very opposite of uncultured. To be honest, I was surrounded by a similar group of book snobs at university, but I never understood why any reader would choose to judge another, regardless of their tastes. After all, who's to say which is the 'right' book to read and which isn't? Isn't it enough that we're choosing to expand our horizons by indulging in literature? Fuck 'em, I say. Read to live, and enjoy the books that make you happy :D
