Two very different men brought together by the deaths of their sons.

Ike and Buddy Lee’s sons were happily married and raising a beautiful daughter. When the young couple is brutally murdered their fathers are left with profound grief…and guilt. Neither were ever able to accept their son’s lifestyle during their lives, now cut so horribly short. But is it truly too late for them? As they both struggle with the incomprehensible loss, is there hope in all the pain they may come to accept their sons and the love they had for one other?

One thing is certain…Buddy Lee feels the deaths must be avenged! In his mind, the police are doing little to find the killers. The two fathers team up, determined to bring some justice to their son’s death (by whatever means necessary.)

I absolutely loved S.A. Cosby’s previous book Blacktop Wasteland and I was certain I’d be placing this latest release right next to it on my favorites’ shelf. But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. It just didn’t connect to me the same way.

Perhaps it was the violence. Yes, my fellow readers, the violence was outrageously over the top. (in my humble opinion.) This gal just didn’t have the stomach for it, finding myself skimming over some of those darker scenes in order to make it through the book.

However, on the bright side, I listened to the audio version and felt the narrator did a fabulous job in the telling of the story.

There are so many five-star reviews for this book. So perhaps this book will work out better for you.

A buddy read with Susanne

JanB I gave this 3.5 stars for the level of violence and for the woke monologues, but rounded up because the audio narrator did such a terrific job. Great review Kaceey!

I am an old white woman and I enjoy reading what is happening in the read world. I do believe that the police are often making decisions on race. Good review. peace, janz

I agree with Rich. We all knew this was a violent book. Just because violence exists in the real world is no reason to avoid it. Learn about it. I have a brother who will not read Elie Wiesel because his stuff is violent - Ignorance may be bliss but it is painful when it catches up to you. Deal with reality. This book is reality. peace, janz

Susanne Absolutely fabulous honest review Kaceey. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this and for reading it with me.

message 34: by Michael (new)

Michael David (on hiatus) Kaceey, I am absolutely disgusted by some of the comments on your review. Whether you knew ahead of time that it was violent doesn't negate how you felt about the book. Whether it touched tough topics or not, that doesn't negate how you felt.

Not everyone has the same feelings about a book, whether the the storyline is important or not.

I appreciate your honesty. People have loved books I hated, and vice versa.

You owe them nothing. Hugs! 🤗💙

Susanne @michaeldavid - you are amazing.

Dorie - Cats&Books :) Fantastic honest review Kaceey!! You reinforced the fact that I thought this would be too violent for my tastes, thank you :)

DeAnn Kaceey, I appreciate your honest review. While I liked this one more than you did, there was a LOT of violence.

Peacejanz Ok - my last comment on this. I do not know anyone who likes/loves violence. It is awful in any manner - verbal or physical. Please do not think that those of us who liked the book, like violence. We do not. We realize that it is a part of life and if we have none in our life, we are thankful. I can like you and like your reviews and read a realistic violent book and like what the book portrays. WE do not have to agree. But it bothers me that you downrated the book because of the violence. I picked up a book the other day and a reader had noted that it was violent. I just did not read it - was not ready for it. For those of you who avoid a book because it is violent, check your newspaper, your local tv or computer. Violence is everywhere. So is silly immature "love" and bad neighbors. Don't skip a book because you do not like some part of it. This book has so much to say about justice, recidivism, accepting others who have different preferences from you. It is not just about violence and the two men who lost sons feel the only way they can attain justice is by violence. Afterall, their sons died violently. If you turn this book down because you don't like violence, what modern book are you reading? The true value in this book is realism. It is all around you, in your neighborhood, your city. Open your eyes. Violence is not the point of the book. peace, janz

Lucy Great review Kaceey ! Sorry you didn’t love this as much as the previous books by this author ☺️

Susanne Kaceey, I just have to say that I really appreciate your honesty here and am very upset by the fact that people are attacking you for having an opinion.
Everyone has a right to one and not everyone has the same one. I mean, you might like Sushi or Cilantro, while someone else does not.

Just because you read an author's prior book does not mean you know what you are getting into when reading his next book, especially if you haven't read the synopsis or other reviews (which we don't).

No one and I mean no one, deserves to be attacked for having an opinion of any kind, but especially not on a book they read fiction at that. I am so sorry that people have said mean hurtful things to you, simply for having an opinion. That was uncalled for. Kaceey, your review was amazing and I for one, really appreciated your honesty.

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - still catching up! Fab review Kaceey! 💞 I'm reconsidering this one now, don't know if I have a stomach for the violence either, we shall see. As Susanne said, sorry for the verbal abuse being hurled your way, that's incredibly uncalled for and everyone's reading experience is different. You're allowed to have an opinion and I'm glad you shared it. Hopefully your current read will make you feel warm and fuzzy again! 😊

Maureen Shame it wasn’t a winner Kaceey, but great review 🌺

I do not know what was mean or hurtful in this discussion. What? What are the mean and hurtful words? peace, janz

Melissa (Semi Hiatus Until After the Holidays) I really appreciate your thoughts on this one Kaceey. Not every book is for every person, and not every book is the perfect book at the perfect time. Reading is so subjective (reference my review for The Perfect Marriage if you want to see extremes in opinion) and even knowing something ahead of time doesn't always prepare you for the actuality of it. Just keep writing your opinions and I'll stand behind you even if I don't agree with you sometimes!

Brenda ~The Sisters~Book Witch Great review, Kaceey! Just read the comments here! Yup I am really frustrated with GR but mostly with the people now on it. It’s not the same as when when we started our little group. Hugs to you!!!

Meredith (Trying to catch up!) Fantastic review, Kaceey! Sorry you didn't love this as much as Blacktop Wasteland. I think I need to lower my expectations.

ReadAlongWithSue ★⋆. ࿐࿔catching up I appreciate that you’ve pointed out this Kaceey. And I’m amazed how brass some can be towards your thoughts. Your review is your review! We don’t all have the same stomach to have it on tv to watch or in a book. It’s not avoiding g it, it’s not pretending it doesn’t exist. FACT….it does.

Trigger warnings…..some put those things in their reviews! Why? Because some may be more sensitive to them OR had life experiences that will trigger a not so good reaction.

I can read certain things while others cannot, others can read certain things which I cannot.

Stop being so judgemental people.

Kaceey had a reaction to parts of it, I’m sure you wouldn’t like it if someone commented a reaction/speech like on here, you’d probably delete it😳

I’m glad someone has pointed how violent this is, at least I can be prepared for it.

Thank you Kaceey

Here here

Peacejanz I repeat - and no one has answered me yet --- exactly what was mean or unkind about the original reviews? We all expressed our opinions. Kaceey did not like the violence. Others of us said that it was a part or life and that the book was produced as violent. There is nothing mean about that. I really do not like chocolate ice cream very much but will eat it if it is the only choice. I love vanilla or butternut. I expressed my preferences. Kaceey expressed hers and I said that I did not care for her preference. Just as you may like chocolate ice cream and tell me so.
There is nothing in this list of reviews that is mean except those who keep expressing sympathy to Kaceey because our views differ and YOU interpret them as mean. I repeat - -- please tell me what is mean about any of these reviews and exactly what did anyone say to Kaceey or about Kaceey that was mean? You can not. You do not want honest discussion about books about what is good or bad about them. Pointing out that the book was portrayed as violent or saying that violence is a part of life is not a condemnation of Kaceey. I keep getting these notifications and so many are vapid - "oh, poor Kaceey, sorry that someone did not agree with you in public". Grow up folks, if you want to be regarded as useful on Goodreads. There are some books I skip over, do not read the reviews. There are some people I skip over - do not read their reviews. I shall continue to read Kaceey' s reviews but some of you..... peace, janz

message 50: by Pat (new)

Pat Great review Kaceey. I still want to read this as violence does not bother me too much but I appreciate your views and you are absolutely entitled to say whatever the hell you want about a book. I have marked books down for various reasons . I remember one where I just couldn’t stomach the overt racism. I know racism exists, I’m not trying to ignore it. I just wasn’t in the mood for reading about it at the time.
