hmm. for sure in the minority with my thoughts and feelings about this one.
i found the chess scenes to be surprisingly interesting. i appreciate how the games and competitions are portrayed with a very high-stakes feel. which is quite an achievement for that kind of feeling to be translated onto paper.
what i was bored with was everything else, unfortunately. i couldnt find depth in the characters and certain events, there are some questionable scenes that i struggled to see a purpose for, and i thought the overall structure of the narrative/plot was repetitive.
would i have enjoyed this more had the story been longer and expanded? maybe. it might feel more developed that way. is it just a case of me not personally clicking with this authors writing style? quite possibly. which means this is definitely a case of “its not you, its me.”
i will have to think about this some more.

I feel like this is how I felt when I started to try to watch the show on Netflix as well so I don't think I'll pick this one up

ive heard so many good things about the show, which is why i picked this up. and after reading it, i thought maybe the story would work better on screen, but now that you say that, maybe not... lol.
I liked both the show and the book, though I‘d say the show is better. Especially because a certain scene is missing that was just unwarranted and thus the character in the show is much more enjoyable.
I enjoyed the Netflix show much more than the book. Granted I listened to it on Audiobook so a lot of the chess scenes were lost on me but I agree, I feel like the author could've done so much more with the story so I was left a bit unsatisfied...but I would definitely give the show a try! I feel like it gives much more depth to the story than the book
