it was ok

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an advance copy of this book. Several years ago, I loved Elin Hilderbrand novels. Somewhere along the way, they started feeling stale and I stopped picking them up. I decided to give this one a chance and unfortunately it was a bit disappointing. In the middle of it, I found myself relaxing into the story and enjoying it a little, but ultimately the book was too long, with characters who felt very surface-level, storylines I struggled to care about, and revelations at the end that were not even slightly surprising. The worst part, however, was the absolute cringefest of reading all the attempts at modern slang every time a young character was in a scene. Hilderbrand fans will enjoy it, but it was not for me.

Elizabeth I gave up on EH after that terrible St John trilogy and 28 Summers. They’re just all the same and feel very repetitive after awhile.

Lisa I didn't even read those. I don't remember when I gave up. They really just kept getting progressively worse.

Jean St.Amand The slang was EXCRUCIATING

Laurie Reilly Thank you for this review. I always looked forward to Elin’s books but I’m having a really hard time with this one and wondering if I should continue reading. I can’t believe all the high ratings, so what am I missing? The first thing that threw me off was that after doing this huge, expensive renovation and insistence on getting five keys, some of the staff that were hired were not even checked out! For such a high end hotel, it made no sense that it seems as long as they had a body to fill the position they were hired! I like the hotel manager, and I find the ghost angle interesting, but I’m having a hard time getting past the lax hiring policy and the actions of some of the staff. Why would Sweet Edie, who was actually qualified for her job, do the silly thing she did! (Don’t want to post a spoiler). There are a couple of employees that I would be interested in hearing their back stories, but Is it worth pushing myself to continue reading? Thanks for any feedback.

Melissa Milich I loved the book.

Rachel Ransom I liked the book- but it definitely won’t age well with all of the pop culture references. Also- how many times can the hydrangea-blue description be used?! Someone needs to make it a drinking game. 🤣

Katy Maxwell I stopped mid sentence to be like “did I really read the term douche-canoe in a book?”

Nonstop cringe.

Jennifer Ciano I'm about to give up on this book as well. Which is extremely rare for me. There's too many characters, I feel like she's telling not showing the text. I'm curious on why have these characters are even in the book. And then there's just some cringy dialogue and explanations and I'm very confused on.

Crystal Wright For me it was the heartbreaker nickname. I rolled my eyes every time it was referenced!

A C Perfect review, my thoughts exactly! The only way I made it through the audiobook was by casually listening while doing housework and cleaning the cat box. Cleaning the cat box was ultimately more satisfying.

Lindsey Mischler All of this!! I thought the decision to make the ghost a character was just strange and unnecessary. The description in the beginning of the book where Grace the ghost gets naked, makes reference to her “full chest and buttocks”, and considered a “dime”, sent me into full, skin-crawling chills lol. She’s a ghost!
