bookshelves: gag-worthy-book

You would think with an appealing cover and equally appealing blurb, that the book itself would be well written. I'm sorry to say that Something More is a horribly written book. It's apparent no professional editing or copy editing has been done. I noticed this within the first few pages. The heroine is supposed to be an 18 year old college freshman, but she acts more like a 13 year old, whining brat with a personality of a wet noodle.

There's also non-stop info dumping and internal musings that need to go. There are multiple words used time and again and many instances of convoluted statements and made up words. And example is this statement that I had to re-read a few times to understand:

"Hiya, Nyla, the ussh?"

What in the world is a "ussh?" I assume it means the usual, but come on! If a word is invented but never explained, how would the reader know what it means?

But my favorite is: "He couldn't resist smearing his kisses all over her breasts, and her stomach." Smearing like butter or jam on toast? What?? How do you smear kisses? That's unbelievably not sexy or romantic and a fail as a writer.

Nyla, our heroine is so Mary Sue and naive. Also her so-called high school bully and eventual love interest, Jamison is full of contradictions. One minute he's an egotistical, mean snob who treated Nyla horrible in high school, but then they were really frenemies but then friends. So much confusions and back and forth wishy-washiness on this relationship.

This was written more like a first draft, and even then it should have been revised multiple times and edited before it was suited for publication. It's insulting to your readers, regardless if you're self published, not to have a professional editor. Expect a horrible review like this one I've given, not to be mean, but a wake up call to treat your writing as a profession, especially if you're playing in the big leagues and publishing your work.

One of the poorest written books I've read this year.

Tani Thank god. I was astounded by most of the reviews here. It is refreshing to know someone else thought it was as poorly written as I did.

Katie(babs) I was surprised also by how much love there is for this book when it's so poorly written to the point I cringed.

Because those people are stupid."

and the reason such books like Fifty Shades have come monster hits.

Tani I don't know of the saying, "If you don't like the story you don't like the story." But I see what you're attempting to say. Unfortunately it's invalid, because the point of Goodreads is to share your opinion of books. It's perfectly appropriate to comment on the author's writing "style".

Katie(babs) I never said that, unless you mean Tez? My response to her statement was about another type of book I found poorly written, which is very popular is 50 Shades.

I've only talked about the story and the work, which has a lack of an editor, not the author themselves anywhere in my review.

Tez Damn it, I forgot deadpan humour doesn't work online. Forgot to add a winkie. My mistake. Then again, I don't find the word "stupid" offensive - heck, I call myself that on a regular basis ;-) My apologies if anyone was offended by that.

Ryanne Murray Look, again I blame society. Since EL James pulled her little circus act that ended with stupid housewives playing the part of seals puching footballs, every writer with fanfiction level writing thinks its okay to publish whatever garbage that comes to thier sex soaked minds and hope for the same lemming treatment. Truth is, if people didnt love the shit, there wouldnt be a demand for it, and then writers would actually have to out in an effort.

And BTW, everyones entitled to thier opinion and entitled to place it when and where they want to. Dont like it, thats your fucking problem. I live under the simple but effective motto of "Absolutely No Regrets" because if you feel passionately about something enough to stand by it, then the rest of it is just white noise created by people with blleding heart tendancies and want everyone to be nice. And those are the ones that prolly have 50 Shades on thier nightstands and vibrators that they call Edward. Smirk.

Ryanne Murray Wasnt talking about what KIND of book it was...just the level of writing thats demanded and supplied. Thats economics 101. And why would I read a book when Ive read a thousand just like it. And where the hell did they GET that cover. it looks like the pics that come with photo frames before you put your own in. Laffs.

Kala Great review. I've been contemplating buying this one, but have decided not to based on your review and the fact that the author is siccing her white knights on you with her blog now. I found nothing offensive in your review - simply a bunch of reasons why you thought the book sucked. After reading the author's blog, I was expecting a bunch of personal attacks and I found none.

Michelle Witte Christina - Did you read the book? Didn't think so. Therefor you really have no room to add your input. You have no idea if this author had an editor or not. None of these people know that. And if you didn't read the book, you don't even have the right to make the assumption.

Just a note to say that the idea that one must read an entire book in order to assess quality and grammatical correctness is nonsense. In the blurb alone I counted five errors, some of them rather obvious, e.g. there should be a question mark at the end of the first paragraph. So it is rather logical to assume that the quality of the writing through the rest of the book will mirror that of the blurb and first few pages.

Carry on. Over and out.

Kate I looked it up. Not even Urban Dictionary has a definition of "ussh".
