Dune (Dune Chronicles, #1)

Ok, my only reference for Dune was the 1984 movie with Kyle MacLachlan. And, honestly, it was the main reason I've always wanted to read this book.

Ohmygod look what that fake-looking piece of plastic shit is doing to poor MacLachlan's nose? How was he even able to act with that thing pushing his nostrils to the side of his face? I can't stop looking at it!
Anyway.
I remember loving that movie when I was young. Ahhhh. I honestly didn't remember much about it other than it was sorta weird, there were giant worms, a bunch of people had glowing blue eyes, and Sting was in it.

After listening to this audiobook, I decided to rewatch the movie and relive the good times.

Wow. Just wow.
What in the holy hell did I just watch? Because whatever it was, it certainly didn't have much to do with the actual book. There were some fucking weird changes that they made to the movie that really didn't do anything for the plot. Like that gross dude with the shit in his face that flew around in that goofy air suit?

In the book, he's just a fat dude!
And that thing they do where they all have drain plugs attached to their hearts?
Not in the book, either!
In fact, none of that fucknut crazy/gross sci-fi shit is in the book.

Blowing shit up with their voice guns? Nope.

Bald Bene Gesserits? Nope.

Bugs with butthole mouths? Nope.

Mentat's with clip-on eyebrows who drink juice that gives them herpes lips? Nope.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard going into battle with a pug? Fuck no!

The list goes on and on...
Not that it should matter.
But it does! Because I was expecting something realllyreallyreally different, and if you go into this (like me) you may end up...well, not disappointed but maybe shocked?
Having said that, I think the book was definitely better.
There was no reason for ass-mouth monsters or oily rock stars in weird rubber underwear. It just makes a lot more sense the way Herbert wrote it.
It's a magic is science tale set in space with an incredibly interesting look at how politics and religion can hold hands with each other and make war babies. I can see why people rave about it. It's honestly an incredibly insightful novel.
You know, if you're into that sort of thing...

A little dense, but worth it.
But dense. That's worth saying twice because this thing is massive and you may get lost in it if giant word monsters aren't your jam when it comes to reading.

I listened to the Audible version which is 21 HOURS (and 2 minutes!) long and might be the way to go for anyone looking for the easy way out.
And I am ALWAYS looking for the easy way out.

Dune.. my Moby Dick.. I have started reading it several times, and I really enjoy what I've read, but I always drown in its density.

Yep. That's why I've been listening to the audiobook while I do other stuff. There's no way I'd ever make it through this sucker otherwise.
Yep! I got it about a year ago and am just now getting to it, as well. It's pretty good. I've been listening about twice a week and I'm still nowhere near done, but it's interesting. Way better than Dracula - my last audible.
Ahh this film... so bouffant. And sting in those gold underpants.... an image I'll struggle to keep out of my head as I go in for the re-read
I remember my parents renting the film, and saying it'd be okay for me to watch - I was 7 years old.The Harkonnen blood plug made a big, terrifying impression on me.
I remember loving the movie, but for the life of me, I can't remember much other than it was sort of dirty. Like...with dirt.
Have read the book . Didn't even know there was a movie . Did knee that Hollywood was about to make a movie for 2020
I only hope the movie moves a little quicker than the book. Boy was that thing long winded. The best sleepin pill I ever took.
My favourite book, think I've read it 6 times now. Still love the movie, has hardly anything to do with the novel but they hired David Lynch, what did they expect? Guy is a certified weirdo

Alexander wrote: "Yeah, a David Lynch movie, even. And yes, that also was a weird choice a the time."Yeah, boy did Mr. Lynch take his vision and run with it.
Mark wrote: "I only hope the movie moves a little quicker than the book. Boy was that thing long winded. The best sleepin pill I ever took."I knew that's exactly what would happen to me, so that's why I listened to it. There's no way I could have done it otherwise.

I forgot all about that until I saw the movie again. *shudder*
I think I read this in high school and I remember exactly zero percent of it, despite giving it 5 stars. I might have to try the Audible route, just to remind myself of the story.
I read the book before the movie and was meh about it due to it being so hyped, but I hated the movie lol
Alexander wrote: "The blood plug thing isn't even in the book, if I'm not mistaken..!"Oh, hell no! There's no damn dog in the book. Why they felt the need to give him a pug is beyond me. lol
Caitlin wrote: "I think I read this in high school and I remember exactly zero percent of it, despite giving it 5 stars. I've looked over the other books in the series and they seem weird as hell. Like, no. I'd rather end on a positive note. Ha!
Alexandra wrote: "I read the book before the movie and was meh about it due to it being so hyped, but I hated the movie lol"That movie! Crazy! I forgot how crazy it was. It had an unnecessary amount of just...CRAZY.

Haha fair. It is certainly not a short series, between the ones by Frank Herbert and the ones by Brian.
Lol. In fact, ROFL! Very entertaining review. I definitely did not remember the pug. Many things in the movie were very weird. The voice guns always really bugged me.I read the book first, btw. I always wondered what people seeing the movie without having read the book make of it. Because it makes no bloody sense.

Yup, it was bizarre lol
Funny thing, H.R Giger was originally intended to be on the art direction team on the Dune movie when it was still in Alejandro Jodorowsky's hands. You can check out some of his artwork, its surreal as all hell.

They take a macabre turn after book two and just keep going. Second star on the right, and straight on till tomorrow.

I was one of those people who hadn't read the book, and I remember loving how wacky that movie was. Now? And especially after reading the book, it's just a pile of bananas!

I'm guilty of using Wikipedia to figure out if I wanted to keep going. I know that's a form of sacrilege, but looking at how it all seems to turn out? Yeesh! I'd like to think of these crazy kids riding off into the sunset and the curtain going down right then. No more, please!

Oh, I have no idea. I just remember thinking how long the sections were when I was shelving books at the library. I never read past the first one.
Thank you for the giggles.I loved this book but read it when I was thirteen or so...I am not sure if I read any of the others but I don't think so :)
If you're interested, regarding Jodorowski's Giger-Dune (cool bandname), there is a documentary about that project, called Jodorowski's Dune, I think. Haven't watched it myself yet.

So nobody read any further?! I knew it!

Oh! I can just rent it from Amazon!
Osiris wrote: "As a teen and 20 yo I thought the movie and book were masterpieces. After 20 years its time for a re-read. I thought I remembered reading heart plugs and purple stained lips. Oh well."Nope. No mention of heart plugs or stained lips in the book. The Mentats were just dudes with computer-like brains
I’ve read up to God Emperor of Dune. It’s definitely weird and I am not sure the writing stands up but the central conceit of the idea of religion, war, control and free will is fascinating. I’ve been meaning to go back and reread God Emperor as the books get super weird and my younger tiny brain couldn’t take it. Perhaps now that I am older (and grumpy) I can handle it.
And maybe I’ll go back and re-reread Dune - there is a fancy collectors edition that I’ve been coveting 🤗
It looked like it got weirder and more 'out there' as the books went on. I would love to read about his kids but I'm thinking I'll just watch the movie?
Books 2 and 3 are good. Book 4 is very boring although I read it all. Some people say that they get better on books 5 and 6.
Anne, best review of Dune ever! Eva! (In a Boston accent). I am impressed you held on for 21 hours. This is one of my favorite books. But I stopped reading the sequels as they were so bad. Thank you for the laughs!!!!
great review! I want to read this book. But I am afraid it will be just like you said, and easy to get bogged down in.
