really liked it
bookshelves: mystery, sweden

My first novel by the Swedish Mystery master, Henning Mankell and not the last, I am sure of it.

From the blurb "It was a senselessly violent crime: on a cold night in a remote Swedish farmhouse an elderly farmer is bludgeoned to death, and his wife is left to die with a noose around her neck. And as if this didn’t present enough problems for the Ystad police Inspector Kurt Wallander, the dying woman’s last word is foreign, leaving the police the one tangible clue they have–and in the process, the match that could inflame Sweden’s already smouldering anti-immigrant sentiments."

What I like about nordic mysteries is how real they feel. The investigation has its ups and downs, it gets stuck, it resumes etc. The main character is not entirely likeable, he has his own prejudices and faults. The refugee problem is debated here and the MC does not have the entirely politically correct opinion, which was refreshing. We get to read how he muses on the subject, but how he also admits when he is wrong.

Mai H. Not my fav of the Nordic noirs, but glad you enjoyed it!

message 2: by Ulla (new)

Ulla I prefer the Swedish Wallander movies with Krister Henriksson, I have only read one of the books. To me the movie version with Kenneth Branagh doesn't feel so Nordic. But the title music (Nostalgia by Emily Barker) is great.

Daniel Mudgett Great series that just gets better the more novels you read. Wallander is so very human with flaws, biases and many strokes of brilliance and insight.

Elaine and Tess the Springer. I won’t be on GR for a bit. Great review, Adina. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I have actually read this book and another couple in the series. My husband loves his books.

Javier Fernandez I have never read this author and I was on the fence whether or not to buy a beautiful Folio Society edition of the book. Your review was the nudge I needed to stop beating around the bush and just go ahead and buy it. Thanks, Adina!
