“Who doesn’t have a book in them?”

What a truly bad book THE SENTENCE is. It is all over the place, and never finds a place to land, or a point. In fact the only reason I finished it was so that I could give it a bad rating, and I have a rule about rating books I don’t finish. Also, it was a book club pick, so I felt obligated. I did switch to the audio version about halfway through so I could listen to it while doing things that were more interesting than the book. Things like emptying the dishwasher, picking up twigs and dog poop from the yard, and other such sundries. Even still, I should have just dropped it. Have I mentioned it’s bad?

This book tries to tackle a bunch of “relevant” issues, covid, BLM riots, politics, etc., but Erdrich wrote this before enough time had passed to see if what she thought about these issues was actually true. This book gets so many (all) of those issues wrong because it rushed to have something to say about them before enough time had passed to see if first impressions ended up being the truth. Instead what we get is a novel that reflects the arrogance of the assumptions of the author’s world view.
The section that deals with covid is especially ridiculous. It is self-important, and for lack of a better word, stupid.

Quotes:
• “It’s like you never learned that our choices get us where we are.”
• “Delight seems insubstantial; happiness feels more grounded; ecstasy is what I shoot for; satisfaction is hardest to attain.”
• “Here I shall be held by love.”
• “A people who see themselves primarily as victims are doomed.
• “Every piece of wood needs a companion to keep it burning.

These quotes are the sum total of what I found valuable in this book. Moving on.
I have some other Erdrich on my “to read” pile. This experience might result in their being jettisoned.

Ms.pegasus I got bored just reading the quotes! Kudos for making it to the finishing line. Hate it when the book club pick becomes such an obligatory slog. At least you got the dishwasher emptied!

Brian The dishwater is indeed empty, Ms.pegasus. And scrubbed, cleaned, and wiped down, etc. :)
"Obligatory slog" is the perfect summation of this reading experience.

Barb H So, what did you really think of the book?? Seriously, your review made me chuckle. But it was such a surprise to see she had written such a mish-mash. She is usually such a talented writer!

Brian Barb,
I did not hold back with this one! Ha!
I really liked her novel THE ROUND HOUSE. And now that I have settled down a bit I might give her another shot someday.

Linda I love this review! This author has been on my list for some time, as my local bookseller raves about her. I guess she's polarizing. Sometime, it will crawl up my list. But I will not feel the need to finish if it's bugging me. (I get your reasons though, they are legit)

Terence M [on a brief semi-hiatus] An enjoyable review of "...a truly bad book...", Brian. I understand your reasons for finishing The Sentence, but it would have been an early DNF for me!

Brian She is a hit or miss author for me, Linda. More misses than hits however. Glad you found my thoughts worthwhile. Appreciate it!

Brian It SHOULD have been for me as well, Terence! I was foolish to solider on.

Charlotte Guzman Loved your review Brian.
I have read a couple of her books, The Round House was one of them and gave good reviews, but this one I may stay away from because of the subject matter for one and giving an opinion on something that had not been finished by the author.
Glad you were able to get some things done around the house. :)

Brian Getting ahead on housework is also a nice feeling, Charlotte. :) I read "The Round House" and enjoyed it. We will see if I pick up any others.

Debbie W. Too bad this Erdrich book didn't do it for you, Brian, but I can see where you're coming from. Taking more time to write this book might have been a better idea.

message 14: by Brian (new) - rated it 1 star

Brian Debbie- I think that when writers write books so soon after events happen they tend to get things wrong. It's best to wait and see. Good advice for life as well in my opinion.
