it was amazing
bookshelves: frequent-re-reads

Judith McNaught's books were finally made available in digital format so I snapped up a few of my favorites. I have frequently reread her stories, but they're now packed away in a box in the garage, so it's been a while. I was thrilled to get them on my Kindle.

I started my McNaught-a-thon with Something Wonderful. I noticed some weird conversion typos. Then I moved on to this one. Goodness! The conversion typos were all over the place! Very sloppy of the publisher. Shoddy work.

Some of them included: "darling" was "darting"; "morn" was "mom"; "barn" was "bam"; "head" was "bead"; and my favorite, "carriage" was "carnage". At one point the heroine, Elizabeth, yells "wait!", but it's written as "wail!" I was constantly translating.

And still I enjoyed the experience. Judith McNaught's historical romances are beloved by so many and with good reason. She creates beautiful chemistry and sweeping romantic moments. While she indulges in the trope of romantic leads jumping to the absolute worst conclusions about each other, she still almost always makes it work.

Lady Elizabeth Cameron is a beautiful, young debutante who meets Ian Thornton -- a man the ton has labeled a scoundrel -- at a house party. Soon she's stumbling into all kinds of inappropriate situations and the consequences are pretty awful.

Both Elizabeth and Ian are intelligent and likable characters. Their chemistry works and they have some lovely, romantic moments throughout. There is also some humor which Judith McNaught does very well.

It is slightly dated as anything written so long ago would be, but it holds up very well nonetheless. If only the publisher hadn't blown it with the conversion to digital, it would have been a perfect rainy day reading experience.

Erika ♥OwlwaysReading♥ Lovely Review! Bummer about the "conversion to digital" problems. Will have to give Judith McNaught a try.

Beanbag Love Thanks, Erika! If you like historical romance, she's one of the queens. I recommend this one as well as Something Wonderful and A Kingdom of Dreams as her best.

Erika ♥OwlwaysReading♥ Definitely into HR! Especially as of late; can't get it out of my system ;)

Beanbag Love Yeah, I get on a kick and I can't get enough. Have you read Lorraine Heath?

Not yet ;)

I was pretty much only familiar with Jule Garwood, Grace Burrowes, Tessa Dare, and Maya Banks. Was recently (VERY recently) introduced to Lisa Kleypas. Soo.... now I have a new obsession, but I'm always open to more.

Lorraine Heath... Any you would start out with 1st? When the Marquess Falls (Hellions of Havisham, #3.5) by Lorraine Heath Looks good, but it's only 4 pre-order right now.

Another good thing about this author is that she is on my library's digital account on Hoopla. YES!!!!!

Beanbag Love Yay! My first Lorraine Heath was "In Bed with the Devil" and I absolutely looooved it. It's the first of the Scoundrels of St. James series and -- IMO -- that series is her best work.

Another good HR author is Julie Anne Long. She wrote the Pennyroyal Green series. The first one of those is "Perils of Pleasure" and it's often on sale.

What Kleypas have you read so far? The Wallflowers? She's amazing. I can't wait for her next book.

AgentScully fab review Bean - that would drive me nuts!

Beanbag Love Thanks, Scully!

Courtney Oh, man! McNaught was one of the first authors who really stoked my love for the genre. I actually read "Paradise" first before I discovered she'd started her career in historical. I loved Ian and Elizabeth and I loved this book. I keep seeing on Facebook that she's working on another book, but nothing definitive yet.

Beanbag Love Another book would be amazing, CC! I didn't like Night Whispers (newer contemp) or Double Standards (older contemp) at all, but I will still get excited about anything she writes.

Nope. Haven't heard of her before :) Thank you!

"The first one of those is "Perils of Pleasure" and it's often on sale."

Ohhh... Beanbag :) You are speaking my language ;)

I've read Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, #1) by Lisa Kleypas & Because You're Mine (Capital Theatre, #2) by Lisa Kleypas Loved them both. I keep hearing about the Wallflowers series. Holding off on buying any more because the kindle price is kinda expensive and Lisa/publisher don't allow you to lend to friends or family (That's probably my biggest issue). One of my Libraries has them, so I'm going to wait until I can get down there.

Beanbag Love LOL! I know. I see the "s" word and my eyes light up.

Lynsey A Great review, Bean! I would have driven myself crazy with all of those digital transfer errors. Wow!

McNaught was my all time fave historical romance writer. I think I cried at every one I read. I'm not a huge fan of her contemporary works, except really Perfect. I believe that historical romance is where she really shines. I hope, wish, dream she will go back to that and give us the story that Nicky and Julianna deserve! ;) (One can wish). LOL
