"We all know this fish...
"Some minds are wonderful for keeping their bloom in this way, as a patriarchal gold-fish apparently retains to the last its youthful illusion that it can swim in a straight line beyond the encircling glass. Mrs. Tulliver was an amiable fish of this kind, and, after running her head against the same resisting medium for thirteen years, would go at it again to-day with undulled alacrity.""

Glad you continued and were rewarded by loving this magnificent novel so much, Jsiva! I also read it this year and even if I was forewarned, the ending left me in tears. Eliot’s characterisation is such a pleasure to immense in.
Thank you, @Nora.. for so long, I found it too daunting...I thought the narrator would be too intrusive and keep pontificating... but no, it was quite nicely done.
@ Ilse, I'm glad I'm not the only one reading her this year! You are so right, I loved Maggie and Lucy! And yes, the tears came for me at the end.
Wow after thinking about a DNF, it was a blistering 5 stars Jsiva!! I have yet to read this author, one day! 🤓🤓
Thank you Mark, as a past literature student, I felt that I should be able to read and enjoy George Eliot, but I couldn't until now.
Thank you for this. I'm on chapter five and was just about to quit because the characters are all so insufferable. I'll keep at it.
